The First Search Engine

The Very first Search engine was called the Phone Book.

There were many different kinds of Phone-books, The white pages listed people and the yellow pages listed businesses.

Every business was listed for free, set in alphabetical order according to topic. On every page in the phone book, at the very top of the page was a " Title " with a "keyword"

The phone-book used Keyword titles to help you find what you were looking for quickly.

By placing "keywords" in this titles a person could flip through the pages looking at the title keywords and in alphabetical order they could find anything they wanted very quickly.

Many businesses paid thousands of dollars to have a full page ad running to attract more customers, other businesses who did not want to spend money, Even went as far as changing their business name to start with the letter A

AAA Towing, A+ Auto Sales, Aaron's Furniture~ just to name a few. As the phone-book listed business in alphabetical order by making your business name start with an A, you were first one the list and got more calls.

The Phone-book is not used much anymore, but your webpages and advertisements and Facebook posts, and video's are all using the same system as the phone-book did.

Today's Search Engines work exactly the same way!

When you have a Store set up with the wrong keyword's and title's or tags your chances are very slim that potential customers can find you.

When you hear " Tags" or "keywords" or "titles" ~Just remember the phone-book.

Think to yourself,... if you were looking for your product listed in the phone-book, what keyword at the top of the page would you look for ? Use that as a tag. Or use it to Title a product. This way people can find you.

If you name your store or your items with words that nobody is looking for, that is exactly who will find it... Nobody

The most common mistake Business owners make when building a website or uploading a video, is using a business name as a title instead of what they offer.

Re: The First Search Engine

So am I losing out by putting the product name as the title? "Soft and Clean Facial Cleanser" vs "Facial Cleanser" with the product name in the listing?

Re: The First Search Engine

Yes.You are loosing Out.

Even Facial cleanser may or may not be the right keyword

Never depend on your own personal opinion to choose the right keywords. Instead, why not find out exactly how many people are looking for the keyword .
The Internet is about supply and demand. You have to supply an already existing demand you can not create a new one without thousands of dollars in advertising.

Do this, lets find out how many people are looking for Facial cleanser open your browser and go to Google search, Once there do a search for "Google keyword tool"

Click on the Google keyword tool and there you will see a page where you can type in a keyword and then find out how many people typed it in last month.

This tool does not cost a dime to use. It is provided by Google free of charge.

Now I just went and did it for you and it seams that there are many options. The one that has 9900 people a month is

Homemade facial cleanser

So if you were to name your product with that keyword phrase, with Etsy placing Google ad's you would be in front of those 9900 people a month

That's almost 330 people a day finding your product compared to the keyword phrase

"Soft and Clean Facial Cleanser" which has zero people typing it in. ( I checked, check it yourself )

Re: The First Search Engine

So I have a dalle with shadow art

https://www.etsy.com/listing/123618227/dalle-de-verre-gone-fishing?ref=shop_home_feat

I type in dalle de vere, competition is low at 480
keywords under it are stained glass pictures, medium, 5000

Does that mean I am better off with stain glass pictures? What does competition mean? If it is high or medium, what puts my dalle as the first seen on the list?

Re: The First Search Engine

Shadow art, competition low, 33,100

rename title "Shadow Art"?

What does it mean to say "shadow art" low competition and 33,100 searches

and

"art" is low competition at 151,000,000 searches?

Re: The First Search Engine

Hello Merissa,

ON the Keyword tool after performing a search for a keyword the first column will be comp. this is the amount of people paying to be placed on the results page when a person types that keyword into Google.

The Global search column is for the everywhere. The Local Search is for Only The United States

Shadow Art at 33,000 means that last month 33,000 people typed in that keyword in Google search

If you divide 33,000 for 30 days you have 1100 people a day looking for Shadow art.

Art by itself will not help you get sales, you must use a keywords that are relevant to your listings.

dalle de vere with only 480 searches would only be 16 people a day typing it into the search engine. Yes you would be better off with stain glass pictures

Re: The First Search Engine

This makes sense. I spent some time thinking of "cute" names for my lotions and bath salts, things like "Lullaby" or "Sugar Cookie," and naturally I put those in my title. Earlier today I had a total epiphany that nobody in their right mind was going to search for "Lullaby lotion." So I did a total overhaul and changed my titles around to things that people would ACTUALLY search for, like "Moisturizing Lotion," "Vanilla scented lotion," "2 oz Vegan Lotion," etc. I am confident that I will start to receive more views, and I will continue to tweak my titles until they are perfect!

Re: The First Search Engine

Hello Irit,

Nice to see you again, The keyword tool can be found here

https://adwords.google.com/o/Targeting/Explorer?__c=1000000000&__u=1000000000&ideaRequestType=KEYWOR...

The keyword tool is provided free of charge by Google. Businesses running pay per click campaigns use this tool to find out what potential customers are looking for on the internet.

Marketing online in any forum is all about supply and demand. You must choose an already existing demand, You can not create a new one, For example Our teammate Jennifer was wanting to name her items with very nice names like Lullaby lotion. I just went to the keyword tool and typed in Lullaby Lotion and no one is looking for that. Zero, Ziltch (:

By renaming her lotion to

"Vanilla bean lotion" she would have her product in front of 480 people a month. when placed on the search engines.

Etsy does place Google ad's for your products at no cost to you., Just make sure your promote setting are turned on.

Always think to yourself... What would someone type in to find what you are selling?

Take a look at the Google Keyword tool, Type in some of the names of your current products and see how many other people on this planet are interested in what you have, in most cases simply changing the keyword can result in tons of activity.

Re: The First Search Engine

Thank you, i will work on it now :)

Question:
Are the important keywords must be first on title, or can they be at any place on the tile for search engine to grab the link

Re: The First Search Engine

I made a search for the word "rustic" for home decor,
and got this:
https://adwords.google.com/o/Targeting/Explorer?__c=1000000000&__u=1000000000&ideaRequestType=KEYWOR...

Ir looks good, and seems to give me more idea for phrases containing the word rustic, like: rustic country decor

Lots of information in that page, should i use it further?

Re: The First Search Engine

I understand that clicking on this link will not hive you what i have seen,
I put the word rustic on top, and categorized it with:
Home Decor & Interior Decorating..

I fell i am jumping into a see, how to go further?

I know that some words are good when it comes to vintage"
rustic
country
mid century
mis century modern

and some more...
I have realized it from Etsy, watching these things being sell nice..

Re: The First Search Engine

So glad to have found this 'team' and workshop, I can use all the help I can get. I listed a few new items today and made sure to include potential search terms and more descriptive words instead of just the name of the piece.

next step: use google addwords tool to make them even more visible.

Thanks for starting this team! I think it's fantastic.

Re: The First Search Engine

Hello Jennifer!

Just a quick Note (: You need to run the keyword tool first. and then use the information to name your items accordingly.

When you have those potential search terms to insert in your products name, Before choosing, Use the keyword tool to see how many other people are looking for search terms.

Re: The First Search Engine

Eva- That google search tool is great! Thank you for sharing. Now here is where I am stuck... If I use the search terms which have a lot of hits in google, I feel like my items just get lost in the Etsy search world because there are so many other options. If I use more specific titles and tags, my items show up on the first few pages on etsy. So which do I go for? Google hits or being found in etsy? I agree people use the same search terms on etsy as they do in google, but I just feel like my shop will not be found in the sea of jewelry listings. Help!

Re: The First Search Engine

Hello Amanda,

Going back to the phone book analogy. Lets discuss this.

Now that you understand how to name your products like you would in the phone book to get on the right page, now lets discuss being at the top of that list of all the businesses sharing the same keywords.

The phone-book listed everyone in alphabetical order, On the search engines, everyone gets listed in "Credibility" Order

Every web page you have ever seen has been rated by Google with a one to ten scale.

Other Search engines like the ETSY search engine use this same type of mathematical equation to understand who's webpage should be displayed in front of people first. without the need of human intervention

There are many factors that the search engines use to list a web page more important then others.

IF YOU USE ALL CAPS LIKE THIS. you get penalized

If you use !!!!!!!! or anything else that people use to draw attention to a reader... You get penalized

Always spell check, and always write as if you were writing to grand-ma. Polite and never more cap's then allowed by proper grammar rules.

Now, when I say "Web Page" just so you know, every product you have has it's very own URL or web address that can be copy and pasted by you or anyone else. This is what I am referring to when I say "Web Page"

Take time in writing your product description including the keyword you are using as the title at least three times.

I totally understand how you must feel about being the sea of other jewelery.

But that's where you need to be !. Search engines want to give great information to potential users. Naming your products right puts you on the right list, but as you noticed there are many on the same list competing for sales. The more people competing the better the keyword must be.

The way Search engines decide who to place at the top of the list is actually very simple.~Think of it like this, At night when you look up at the sky, can you pick out the brightest stars? Of course you can!

Out of hundreds of thousands of visible stars it is easy to see the brightest.

You have to make your web page (each product page and the store page url's) shine brighter then your competition and this is done by simply being more activity and having more links pointing to your web page. More so then your competition.

Each time a person favorites your item, your star gets a tiny bit brighter.

Each time you place a link to your product web page on Facebook or a blog or a classified ad posting ~ Your start gets a tiny bit BRIGHTER

Each time a person visits your product's web page~ Your star gets brighter.

You can use other stars too.. YouTube shines very bright, make a video and name the video with your keywords

Craigslist shines very bright. Create a listing Craigslist using your keywords as the title, place a link to that products individual web page inside the ad

This is what it is all about.

When you click favorite on another persons items, this creates a link back to your store page. eventually this link gets found by not only Google but also the ETSY search engine.

Marketing your products is hard work. You have to get all the URL"s for each of your products and start telling the world about them by placing links to your individual products page and also to your shop's page.

Post them EVERYWHERE !

Blogs~

Create social media accounts for them( there are hundreds of free social media websites like twitter and Facebook LinkedIn, stumble upon, Pintrest.)

I can send you a list of hundreds, Just let me know.

Now one important thing you have to do is name your images you post outside of ETSY with your keywords for example if I was going to post an image of my product on craigslist, I would make sure the Title of the craigslist ad was exactly what the keyword

Re: The First Search Engine

**** Important****

Stay exactly on topic of your product description. Do not discus anything else but the item on the item description page.

Many people think that the description area is for informing people about business or hours or other non relevant information.

Do not mention other non related products. or information.

~ And do a great job on the description of your products. Most business owners do not invest much time into writing descriptions. Take advantage of this, it makes them easy to "OUTSHINE"
