Why don't dog owners understand?

Tonight my neighbors dogs got out...all 4.

I have 4 strays that come to my back door...2 occasionally, but 2 all the time...a small black female and her kitten. She hangs out most nights on my back porch with her little one. I can't approach them but I so badly wish to tame them down and bring them in.

So the neighbors dogs get out, they corner one or more of the 2 black cat/kitten...i couldn't tell. I stepped out on my back porch cause i heard people talking. The neighbors were calling only one dogs name. I scanned the backyard, no dog, no people looking for dog. The voices were getting farther away. I was thinking of stepping back in but suddenly there was a ruckus on the side of the house, complete with hissing...i ran over and saw a white animal...assumed it was a dog...i yelled to leave the cat alone...but it was dark...the cats black...i don't know if they ran, if they were chased, if the kitten or cat was hurt, i can't find them. I chased the dog home, their other dogs were out too...they got them back in, the turned off the lights and went to bed. I sit up worried checking the back porch.

why if a dog attacks a dog the attacked dog owner gets upset and its treated seriously but if a dog attacks a cat its ...oh they were just being dogs and the cat owner is left treated as if they should have no right to be upset cause their dog is worth more than the cat.

Gonna go check the parch again to see if the cats come back but i have a feeling it is going to be a long worried night.

I know what you mean about the attitude some people have towards cats. Unfortunately they aren't as valued as dogs to many people in our society. The poor cats have just as much right to be here as dogs do. I have always loved and cared about cats and I for one have always valued them as much as dogs maybe even more because of how they are given a raw deal in life . Please let us know if the kitty comes back I hope so much he does.

So relieve! kitten showed up tonight and is tucked up against momma at the food bowl mostly playing with the kibble but occasionally eating one. They are much more jumpy than they were predog attack...it is gonna take them awhile to calm back down when here. I really would like to tame them both down, my indoor cat Mew really needs a playmate since my girl kitty Scat passed away.

Great to hear! It is possible to tame them, I have a couple of ferals that are now tame, it does take time and patience.

Re: Why don't dog owners understand?

first of all, those are not responsible dog people. we have 3 dogs and all 3 are trained and actually come WHEN CALLED. untrained dogs are not acceptable to us, and our dogs are also trained to know that the cats are not prey although they are versatile hunting dogs. when we brought home Alice as a tiny kitten, she was just incorporated into the pack.

i am so sorry your neighbors are not responsible dog owners, and that you went through all of that concern. like Sara, i held my breath through your posts. i think it is shameful that the dog owners didn't contact you. it would be great if you could attract the feral cats inside and let them have some safety. i never have, but know folks who have.

Re: Why don't dog owners understand?

I've tamed down ferals before but they were cats that stayed at the house longer so i had more of an opportunity to tame them down. She and the kitten come about 9 pm and leave about midnightish and its dark and buggy outside so not the best time to spend time with the feral fur babies.

Re: Why don't dog owners understand?

I second that people can be bad pet owners, often reflective of bad human's. Some cat owners are also dog owners. My sister has both, and took in feral's (1 currently), they take time.
