What about using wooden buttons?

I am making crochet boots for babies. For the moment I am using plastic buttons, but as it is not ok with CPSIA I am trying to find other solutions. I live in Italy, so I am not really under this low, but as it concerns children I would like to do all possible to make my products safe. As I understood - yarn is ok, if it is natural - wool, cotton, silk and so on. But with buttons - what if I would use wooden buttons? Would it be ok with this low? Please, help! I am trying to read as much as I can but there are so many tricky things about this low...

I believe wooden and shell buttons are okay, but all buttons are a choking hazard so you need to include that information on the item.

Re: What about using wooden buttons?

Wooden buttons are fine, if there isn't a coating on them. Meaning you can't have shellac or wax or such on them. Just plain ole natural wood. I think this is going to actually create some interesting new ideas on closures on children's clothing. Like I have said before, we are creative people, we will survive this. There is actually someone on here in Etsy that sells wooden button, but he uses tung oil on them. I am sure he would be happy to not put anything on them if we wanted. I think the site is called WoodenTreasures.

Re: What about using wooden buttons?

Yes, unfinished wood is exempt. Beeswax is exempt as well, so you can use beeswax to seal/polish your buttons!
