What about fabric only items?

I hope that I am not double posting but the products that I make are baby wraps and slings. The only materials I use are cotton. Occasionally I use a print but if need be these can be avoided.

My question is do fabric only items still need to be tested? I am so new to this cpsia thing......

Thank you!

Re: What about fabric only items?

It's my understanding that fabric items need not be tested. If you do not use any metal or plastic clasp and such you should be fine. However they may get you on the labeling thing. Perhaps someone else can specify on that.

Re: What about fabric only items?

Hmmm.... I really love my prints... am I correct in thinking that if the company tests the prints then I don't have to?

Thank you soooo much for such quick replies and the helpful answers.

Re: What about fabric only items?

Fabric and thread are exempt from testing. You do have to label the items though. The label can be printed on fabric on your ink jet at home if need be. Here is a thread in which I explaine a lot and supplied good links to other threads regarding all this:

Re: What about fabric only items?

Thank you so much TheEnchantedSquare. That is incredibly helpful. I feel much better. However, I still feel terrible that everyone has to go to so much trouble to make things they love.

Happy Day

Re: What about fabric only items?

I wouldn't look at it as trouble. When this law first came about it was going to be a lot of trouble. Now, we just have to do what pillow, clothing and other manufacturers do and that is tag our items. We are even expemt from lot numbers because of our size. The hardest part now is keeping months and years straight and that doesnt seem like to much to me.

Oh, I definitely spoke out of ignorance on that one.... I should have updated myself on the new modifications to the bill. I am glad they have made such great inclusions and I apologize that I didn't read more before I remarked. I really appreciate your info Thenchantedsuare. Thank you again.

Happy Day

Re: What about fabric only items?

One thing I took away from one of the threads a while back was to go the the FTC and register your company name, address, etc and they will issue a RN number so it will cut down on a lot of info necessary for the label. It only took me 2 days to get the number. I'm just now getting this set up on my labels, so we'll see how it goes.
Good luck with making your slings. Beautiful work.

Re: What about fabric only items?

Marking this thread. I am new to etsy and need to get up to speed on this subject ASAP. Dumb question- what does FTC stand for and how do I go about registering? Can I do it online? Is there a fee? Sounds like it would make sense.

mgmmama, FTC stands for Federal Trade Commission

Re: What about fabric only items?

FTC stands for Federal Trdae Commission when you register with them they keep all your business information on hand if there ever is a case of needing to trace a particular item. If you look at most products you will se the RN number. If you go to the FTC website and input that number you will see that company's info-including a real person who owns them, address, phone
It's easy to register just go FTC.com and look for the tab for registering. It's fast and easy and they usually get back with you within 48-72 hours. I had mine in 2 days.
I acutally read about it and thought why not.

Re: What about fabric only items?

Somewhere in this CPSIA area to the latest and "final Ruling" for this bill. It has a lot of great information but it also provides us with a direct contact at CPSC Directorate for Health Sciences if you want to ask them questions.
Her name is Kristina Hatlelid, khatlelid@cpsa.gov

Yes, you will need to label. Anything worn by 12 and under children.

Re: What about fabric only items?

So I don't have to label if I don't make anything for children 12 and under right?

What do I need to write on the label? I was just about to order sewing labels with my shop name on it.

==========================================================
The minimal info required for the CPSIA's tracking labels is :
* Company Name or RN number
* The town & state, that the finished item was manufactured at or the final assembly completed in
* Date of manufacturer or completion of products

The FTC label require diferent infomation that includes:
* Fiber content
* Country of origin of the fiber
* Care or washing instructions for the finished item
For certain product catergories there's more info that's required to be on the label

The two government agencies have yet to distinguish if all this information may be on 1 single label or if there needs to be 2 separate labels for children's items.

To readup more on the 2 separate labeling laws start with these:
