Specific question on how to list materials on FTC label?

I am a little confused on how to list my materials: Let's take for instance that I have one of my blankets.

You can see it here:

http://www.etsy.com/listing/55217014/out-to-sea-plush-oversized-minkee

It is 100% polyester minky on the back, and what I would guess 10% minky polyester on the front and 40% cotton on the front.

So on my label do I list is as:

Back: 100% Polyester
Front: 10% Polyester, 40% Cotton

or

Materials: 60% Polyester, 40% Cotton

or

Back: 100% Polyester
Front: 100% Cotton
Triangle Patches: 100% Polyester

Do you get where I am going with this? Does my question make sense? I am just wondering which way is best before I go to the trouble of printing them. Thanks!

Re: Specific question on how to list materials on FTC label?

You do not want to say 60% poly, 40% cotton. That is for a blended fabric, consisting of 60% polyester fibers blended with 40% cotton fibers.

Back: 100% Polyester
Front: 10% Polyester, 40% Cotton
this one does not add up to front 100%

I guess the 3rd one would be okay. Your FTC label could be on a hangtag, rather than printed on a sew-in label. You could just write the fabric content and washing instructions on it.

The CPSIA label must be sewn in. I say on it, Handmade in the USA of imported fabric.

Re: Specific question on how to list materials on FTC label?

You may want to see if you can get help from your local craft guild, a SCORE mentor, or the regional SBA office in obtaining professional legal advice about what goes into the making and selling specific products due to the complexities of the CPSC, CPSIA, state based laws, and the FTC.

Here's an opinion that may help or wind up confusing you more:
I know for outerwear that the FTC allows you to list the fiber content for each section of the garment.
Example (from a coat from a national retailer)
Shell 100% Wool - Peru
Lining 70% Nylon - China 30% Cotton - Mexico
Insulation 100% Polyester - China
All percentages are exclusive of trim and decorations.
Professional dry cleaning methods only.
NO mechanical drying methods, allow to air dry if wet.
NO iron, do not allow to come in contact w/ extreme heat.
Assembled in Malaysia

I guess if your blankets have a definable front and back that you could list the materials on your care and content label in a similar manner. If your items are reversable in use you may have to label the contents by individual components vs the overall weight of the total product. Perhaps the best bet is to go to several B&M retailers that carry baby blankets and look at how the labeling is done for those.

Re: Specific question on how to list materials on FTC label?

if I make adult aprons does the label need to be attached or can it be a hang tag?
I swear I can't memorize all the FTC rules..

keep in mind the highest % is supposed to be listed 1st, then descending %s.
I have a problem in that I custom make my items and so I can't order labels,
If I can do hang tags, that sooo simplifies my life...
I also make items that contain wool, another labeling law,
<-------sighs in frustration

I believe the FTC compliant label must be sewn in, not a hang tag...

Re: Specific question on how to list materials on FTC label?

If you look at this link right under Sectional Disclosure you would follow the Back and Front examples you posted!
http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/business/textile/bus21.shtm#section

As far as goldenwatercreations asked about attaching labels, it says this:
"Label placement and attachment
The label(s) with required information must be securely attached to the product until it is delivered to the consumer. However, the label(s) need not be permanently attached.
Note: Many consumers and professional cleaners consider it important to have fiber information on a permanent label. Also, remember that garments must have care instructions on a permanent label. Therefore, it may be useful to have the two pieces of information on the same label.

Note: Customs may require that the country of origin of imported goods be on a sewn-in label.

In a garment with a neck, a label disclosing the country of origin (on the front) must be attached to the inside center of the neck — either midway between the shoulder seams or very near another label attached to the inside center of the neck. The fiber content and manufacturer or dealer identity can appear on the same label (front or back) or on another conspicuous and readily accessible label(s) on the inside or outside of the garment."
But it also goes on to say something about not being able to donate to charity, give to a thrift store, or even sell at your own yard/garage sale without the tag. But it can be given to family/friends.

And for your reading "pleasure", rules regarding required care labeling. These MUST be sewn in.

Re: Specific question on how to list materials on FTC label?

I just finished reading the 17 pg FTC document: http://business.ftc.gov/documents/bus21-threading-your-way-through-labeling-requirements-under-texti...

It's not nearly as scary as I thought it would be. I just hightlighted everything pertaining to me as I read & I learned alot. Most importantly: 1. nowhere does it mention a required size label 2. Garment care instruction labels must be permanent but content labels do not.

Since my fabrics vary greatly in every project, I'm thinking of printing hangtags with that info & sewing in a "dry clean only" or "machine wash & dry" label.

Now I'm venturing in to learn more about RN #'s.
