Question about keeping Etsy shop open...

Since it is ok to sell items made before Feb 10th, is it ok to keep our Etsy shop open & not add new items?

Also, (it is hard to get a straight answer from research) I get all of my ribbon & supplies from companies that test their products before selling to the public...is this good enough or they want the FINISHED product tested? And, is it necessary to get one of a kind (custom) items tested?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Question about keeping Etsy shop open...

I think if you are reselling an item (such as a boutique) then they can sell items made before Feb. 10th. I am of the understanding that we cannot continue to list our items that haven't sold, after Feb. 10th, unless they have been tested.

I am also of the understanding that even if the supply item we bought was certified for testing, we still have to test the end product.

Crazy, huh?

I was wondering if the retail stores that sell childrens items will be able to continue to sell after Feb. 10? Do you think that they are going through the testing process with all of their inventory?

Re: Question about keeping Etsy shop open...

I was under the impression that if you are selling an item that could be intended for a child under 12 years old you have to have it tested. I have also heard that you have to get the finished product tested and buying from a company that tests supplies is not good enough. All items that you made for children have to be tested.

Re: Question about keeping Etsy shop open...

This is insane...We by the supplies to make our products in the USA...They test everything before it hits shelves to be purchased any way...so why do we have to retest? Basically We have to put our etsy shops on vaca until this whole things sorts out or what?

Re: Question about keeping Etsy shop open...

That is what I am going to do. The only thing I can sell to 12 yrs & up would be Extra Large bows & headbands- I don't think older kids or adults want a cute bug or animal bow in their hair, lol!

Re: Question about keeping Etsy shop open...

I really do feel that it will get all sorted out. As long as the US tests for lead, and we buy our products from the US, then it is ridiculous to have to test again. If a product was made in another country that doesn't test, then I can see the concern. I feel that the US should not allow that product to be sold in our country if the lead content is beyond what is considered safe. Anything made in the USA should be safe and if we buy those products to make our items, then it is safe. End of story. (sounds good to me - lol)

Selling instructions is still "legal". I can just see all the families making their own clothing and accessories because they can't buy them anymore.

Re: Question about keeping Etsy shop open...

ridiculous...My head is literally spinning...I do not hink they thought this one thru...atleast not to the effect of the common public...I see how the law should pertain to Large Manufacturers whom we buy ou materials from...but not to resale/thrift stores or to handcrafted items ect...I can't afford to spend $400 to retest a $45 Tutu...

I just read something that says it's more like thousands of dollars to get things tested...
