anyone working on permanent labels?

(I looked in the forum posts and couldn't find anything about this) What are you doing about the permanent labels? What information are you including? Will iron-on labels work? I understand I would have to have that tested too (hahah) but is that permanent enough or does it need to be inked on? I read somewhere it can't be sewn in.....

Re: anyone working on permanent labels?

Somebody posted great directions on how to make your own tags with printable fabric. Then you can add "batch numbers" and all the required information.

I've hunted through my links and can't find it, I thought I had marked it for later. It was a great idea!

I'll keep looking....

Re: anyone working on permanent labels?

Do you think I can print off generic iron-on labels with spaces to add the batch/date details with a fabric marker or sharpie?

Re: anyone working on permanent labels?

The iron-on stuff I can print and put on clothes isn't permanent by any means, so I think I used it like twice. That said, it's attached so it might be permanent.

There's a thread on the labeling requirements at Fashion Incubator:
http://fashion-incubator.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=3492&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

I don't have time to finagle a label that I can add unique info to with a Sharpie (one of the suggestions I got), or to do the paperwork; I'm spread about as thin with my shop and my kids' homeschooling as I can comfortably be without dropping balls. It's all the more irritating because the garments I dye already COME WITH their own labels and the dyeing doesn't change the care information in any way, nor do the dyes contain lead or phthalates, so for me the labeling is a complete waste of time. :-(

Re: anyone working on permanent labels?

How many of you have RN numbers?

On the post linked by generations, there is a lot of useful information about textiles. It sounds like sewn-in labels are okay.

Re: anyone working on permanent labels?

Superfly as I understand it sewn-in labels are OK, the only thing we can't do is have it be a sticker or a hang tag (paper tag attached to the item with a plastic barb).

Re: anyone working on permanent labels?

Okay, I only briefly looked at this part of the law, because I don't thing it's feasible to but a hang tag on a barrette...Am I wrong? I could see using a hangtag, but would you use a barrette with a label hanging down from it?

Re: anyone working on permanent labels?

I mean, I could see using a detachable paper hang tag, not a perm. one

Re: anyone working on permanent labels?

Barkingdog, did you get your labels printed with the RN# plus care instructions, etc.? How much needs to go on that label?

Re: anyone working on permanent labels?

This information I'm including is:

Statement that it's all new materials
Filling content
Manufacturing location
Cleaning instructions with appropriate care symbols
Warning statement (for small parts and recommended age)
Company name
Company RN
Web address
Year of manufacture

This sewn-in label will be printed in black.

Re: anyone working on permanent labels?

I got all of this information on a 1" wide x 2.75" long loop-fold label.

Re: anyone working on permanent labels?

Thank-you GenerationsTieDye for printing that link. I think that's very helpful- as far as recognizing what they want on labels. Doing what they require is something else- All of my items are one-of-a-kind- There are no batches and excuse my ignorance, but what exactly is a RN# I don't think I'm going to do anything about this until the law is firmly decided and things are clearly stated

Re: anyone working on permanent labels?

A RN (registration number) can be obtained online from the FTC. It replaces the manufacturers name and address on the label. Since most times the labels are so small and contain so much information, the RN conserves valuable space.

Re: anyone working on permanent labels?

the labeling aspect of this law goes into effect when? Is it Aug 14, too?

I think most of us haven't even dealt with the labeling aspect since it's unlikely we'll be able to remain in business at that point anyway.
