So I was concerned about phthalates and the chalkboard fabric I use to create chalkboard place mats. When I went to the retailer that I buy the fabric at Nancy's Notions, it specifically says that chalkboard fabric is non-compliant! Whoa. here's the links

Michael Miller Rep got back with me today and said that laminated cotton is non-compliant also. They are sourcing laminates that will pass the Phthalate test.
Yep, and I've been concerned about poly fleece made from recycled soda bottles as well as "eco-fi" felt and phthalates too. I've been unable to get a straight answer from any manufacturer about it. The ones I've got info for are quick to say they are lead free, but the phthalates are another thing.

LerayjessDesigns - take a look at this website http://cpsia-compliance.blogspot.com/ it lists manufacturers who ARE compliant, and the addresses to write to them to receive a copy of their certification. You'll be happy to know that Kunnin felts - including ecofi/ecospun IS CPSIA compliant!
I know it has been a few days since this thread was going, but I just saw the reply with the great link, and wanted to bring it up again for others too!! Thanks SO much stayawake!!!!!

I still see a lot of chalk cloth items being sold. Is there something that I don't know about. All of my info says that it is non-compliant. I would love to sell my chalk again, but not if its not compliant.

People are probably selling them because a.) the law isn't being enforced and b.) these things were safe to sell a year ago and are still safe to sell.

I know and my kids all have them and I have made a ton for family and friends, they are all fine too! This law just makes me soooo...well you know. I have a bunch of the chalk cloth and would love to use it up.
Can anyone provide me with a link on the CPSIA site that specifically states that chalkboard fabrics are banned? Trying to nail this thing down and just can't find anything concrete about it. I have scanned and looked for hours...I'm looking for the specific terminology.
Chalkboard fabric is coated, processed to give it the Chalkboard write and wipe off ability. That's what makes it non exempt. It has failed testing, and is why Nancy's notions says it's non compliant. I believe it's a phthalates issue that makes it non compliant.

bluecuddly I pulled all my I spy bags and the pet shop softie set that I had because of this. As far as I know the vinyl has phthalates in it and its not compliant. Cute shop you have too!!

Everything I've read states chalkboard fabric is non-compliant. I'm not sure if that's enforced or not, but I wouldn't want to keep selling them and either hurt a child or have an action against me by the CPSIA. I pulled all mine awhile ago.

Sorry to say...this is like beating a dead horse.
Until they can come up with another way to make the chalk cloth, we will no longer be able to make these items. It is clearly stated that chalk cloth is NOT compliant and should not be used in products for children 12 and under. As much as I hate it and as much as I know my kids and others enjoy playing with it....they say its not safe, so I am not taking any chances.

I didn't have time to read over all the past postings on this subject, but I just found this on Nancy Notions website regarding the chalkboard fabric (link below also):
This product DOES PASS the CSPIA (Consumer Safety Product Improvement Act) tests. Safe for children of all ages
This applies to the NEW product, not what you have purchased previously. After the law was passed, chalk board fabric was reformulated, so what you have in stock MAY NOT PASS. If in doubt have some tested.
