I'm almost out of buttons. After that one pair I had failed the XRF test I will absolutley not buy any buttons that have not already been tested. But I am having trouble finding suppliers that already do a tox-screen.

Anyone know anything? I'll be forever grateful... *bats eyelashes fetchingly*

Re: CPSIA compliant buttons - Anyone know a vendor that already tests?

LCC, where do you buy Dritz buttons?

The only craft store here in town is Hobby Lobby, and they don't sell their buttons. Joann's is a 25 minute drive, which is frustrating.

Are flat covered buttons covered in fabric all the way around?

I've never used them. I've only used the ones that kind of stand up.

If they are covered all the way around, they should be exempt. I read in the handbook that a component doesn't have to be tested if the child doesn't have access to it.

P.S.- I am talking about the flat covered buttons with the two holes in them, like a plastic button.

Re: CPSIA compliant buttons - Anyone know a vendor that already tests?

I did get a GOC from Dill's (a basic button line sold at many fabric stores, from Beverly's to local fabric discount stores)--they don't have certificates for each product but I did get a letter stating CPSIA compliance for all but rhinestone buttons. Anyone can convo me for a copy...

Sorry it took me so long to respond. I found the Dritz button at JoAnne Fabrics. They have an online store too. I still have not heard back from Dritz. These buttons do not say "Not for children under 12" as the other do. The way they are labeled looks as if they are following the guidelines so I will keep trying to get in touch with someone.

Re: CPSIA compliant buttons - Anyone know a vendor that already tests?

Has anyone found a wood button that is natural and washable? I'm putting buttons on dolls and bears so they don't have to be washable, but, I would hate for the toy to get wet and the buttons to ruin. Aslo, in regards to buttons...I can sell these toys with the buttons as long as I put a warning for any child under three, correct?

I think the CPSC has yet to determine accessibility for covered buttons. Even so, you still have the shank or metal wire that sticks out the bottom.

Barkingbirds, have you considered driftwood for buttons. I have some driftwood knots that are rock hard bits of driftwood that I know would be perfect. If they were sliced, lightly sanded and then drilled they would make excellent wood buttons and would hold up perfectly through machine washings. Just a thought.

I've used natural beeswax finished wood buttons on my toys for years and they work great. Just make sure to get the ones without bark. :)

Oh, and shell buttons are another good natural alternative.

Re: CPSIA compliant buttons - Anyone know a vendor that already tests?

Sorry I don't have time to read every post on this subject but has anything changed in terms of us having to test buttons ourselves (even though the supplier is compliant and providing a GOC/GCC)? Thanks

Re: CPSIA compliant buttons - Anyone know a vendor that already tests?

Just making sure I got this right Bluementhallansing.com is compliant and they will give us the info we need stating this? Looking at the buttons the have on their site, I see that walmart where I live sells some of these buttons. So does this mean I can go there and buy them then ask Bluementhallansing to send me the certs for the buttons I have?

Re: CPSIA compliant buttons - Anyone know a vendor that already tests?

jdruiz, You may want to contact them directly with a few specific SKUs or style #s before you buy and ask if they have a General Certificate of Conformity (GCC) that has the testing information done to the CPSIA's criteria. Also ask them if you buy the product at WalMart or elsewhere if they will still send you a copy of the GCC, some manufacturers will only send the hardcopy of the GCC or other test results if you order direct from them.

Re: CPSIA compliant buttons - Anyone know a vendor that already tests?

OBaby thanks for the Blumenthal lansing info! That's breakthrough. It seems that the manufacturers would want to post certs on their websites. The man hours of answering our emails is going to be awfully labor intensive. I'm going to have to make a list for them!
