I'm almost out of buttons. After that one pair I had failed the XRF test I will absolutley not buy any buttons that have not already been tested. But I am having trouble finding suppliers that already do a tox-screen.

Anyone know anything? I'll be forever grateful... *bats eyelashes fetchingly*

Re: CPSIA compliant buttons - Anyone know a vendor that already tests?

I used to use many buttons in my items. When the law came into effect I called several button manufacturers for the needed documentation and they said "yes, yes, we'll send it" and nobody ever did! I had a 4 month old at the time and did not have time to chase anyone around so I just gave up the buttons alltogether.

I wonder if wool felted balls wouldn't work as buttons? Or maybe wooden buttons?

All the numbers, I absolutely love your shop. Especially the dress with the deer...

Re: CPSIA compliant buttons - Anyone know a vendor that already tests?

Hi everyone, this thread is eye opening. I just listed fabric pony tail holders that I made using metal buttons. I also treated, printed on, and washed the fabric myself. They're bunny themed.

Do I need to have all of these materials certified before I can sell this item?

Re: CPSIA compliant buttons - Anyone know a vendor that already tests?

actually thought of a question. Are the buttons ok if they are covered? then the plastic is not accessible. I'm a Canadian who has a lot of sales in the US and am trying to figure out how to be compliant.

Re: CPSIA compliant buttons - Anyone know a vendor that already tests?

theselovinghands, covered by what?
The entire button would need to be totally enclosed by a raw component that is either exempt (ex. fabric) or by something that has been tested to be compliant.

Re: CPSIA compliant buttons - Anyone know a vendor that already tests?

jewelrydesignsbyME...a question for you (since you seem to be the EXPERT!)

There is a shop on Etsy that claims its cover buttons are CPSIA compliant. They state this clearly in their shop and offer no explanation. When I convo'd and emailed the shop for verification ( how is it CPSIA compliant? was it tested? do they have a COC or testing document?) I never received any responses to any of my attempts to contact them.

So my question is if you use a cover button that is completely covered by exempt material then attached to a barrette, headband, etc without any of the metal accessible to the consumer, can it be used? Thanks for any help!

Re: CPSIA compliant buttons - Anyone know a vendor that already tests?

I think wooden buttons are a good idea for the 3 and up crowd. But what about the choking hazard issue. I have been noticing since this thread that very few of my toddlers clothes have buttons. Most things are snaps, elastic or velcro. This is easier, so that is why I figured clothing designers were doing this. But I wonder if they were trying to avoid liability for choking issues. I certainly think my two year old would put a button in his mouth if he could. If I told him not to he certainly would. Should we not be doing buttons at all on stuff for tiny tots?

Re: CPSIA compliant buttons - Anyone know a vendor that already tests?

This whole thing has put me off making dress for girls, and I really want to. I have plans for a sun dress that ties at the top, so that is not an issue.

As far as the vintage-style party dresses I have in mind, I guess I will just make them for three and up. But, then I still have to find a supplier who tests the buttons.

Some of this thread is older, so currently do you have to re-test if the manufacturer has provided you with certification?

Re: CPSIA compliant buttons - Anyone know a vendor that already tests?

I found someone who makes button with wood with a natural finish. I have contacted this person to ask what kind of finish they use. Fingers crossed that the these would be okay.

These kind of buttons get pricey though. I'm seriously considering selling the dresses with the buttons (for girls over 3) on at a higher price and one without buttons at a lower price.

I could send a sample of thread with the dress, like All The Numbers at the beginning of the thread said. I would even stitch a little x or something where the center of the button would be.

Re: CPSIA compliant buttons - Anyone know a vendor that already tests?

P.S. You cannot tell me that the ABC, kitty buttons, etc. I see at the store are not intended for children. These buttons should have to be tested as they appeal to kids.

Okay...sorry for the rants and rambles here...hehe...it's late and I can't sleep.

Re: CPSIA compliant buttons - Anyone know a vendor that already tests?

I am thinking a natural wood button would be the way to go, but even if you go this route would you still need a certificate to prove it is not toxic? I am currently making dolls to sell and the only buttons I use are to attach the arms. granted, i am sure there is a way around it, but I like the look of the button. The buttons I am using now are coming from Wal-mart...just a generic black button. Do you think their buttons are tested?

Re: CPSIA compliant buttons - Anyone know a vendor that already tests?

I doubt those buttons are tested bc as someone said above the companies don't see the buttons as being made for children's clothing. But, like I said above you can't tell me that the ABC and cutesy buttons you see in the store aren't for children.

From what I understand, wood is exempt. But, this all depends on what finish is used. Someone earlier used the example of a natural finish such as bees wax as being exempt.

Try www.shopsophias.com. That site has a sewing notions section that states their buttons, zippers, etc. are CPSIA compliant and will provide GCC's. It's a wholesale site so you would have to register as a wholesaler.
