ok so if i knit or crochet a item of yarn I am good, but what the heck am i supposed to use for buttons or what not. I know wood is ok plain not painted or treated. But other than chopping down the trees around my house to make "safe" buttons.. (other than splinters LOL) what do you guys use? Any thoughts would be really helpful.. thanks

Re: Buttons?

Also, do buttons on chidren's clothing fall under the small parts choking hazard rules?

You know, I think this weekend I just may try making some buttons, just to see how hard it would be.

Re: Buttons?

yes, RagingWool, I had the same thought when I read the responses to my post about vintage buttons...then I thought I was missing something? am I? doesn't the law apply only to kids' items? Anyone?? It it doesn't, then we all have to run like hell and test all of the items in our shops. I don't think that was the intent of the legislation..

Re: Buttons?

Oh I did have kids items,I just took them down. I make kids things all the time. (even for my own kids) I just did not want to have to test buttons. I do make sweaters and other items that require buttons. I don't want to use plastic, cause that whole test your plastic, and wood is really cool but then if it has a finish on it, that is another ball game. I really wanted to start selling my kids items again... I will have to just make some of yarn.. the bobble idea is great. I can do bobbles :)

Re: Buttons?

I've written to a button manufacturer, inquiring about lead content in their buttons. When, and if, I hear back from them, i'll share the info with all of you.

Favorite Findings buttons tests and are all okay. There are others too - you can find them on the thread about supplier testing.

Re: Buttons?

I can't use crocheted or knotted buttons, i need them for shirts. have you seen a shirt for boy with crocheted buttons? I've never seen...
I have lots of vintage buttons and also buttons that I took off my husband's old shirts. I don't know what to do now. I have already made some things for sale, but I am hesitating about putting them online.

Ok stupid question who sells favorite findings buttons. Joanns? walmart? hobby lobby? That is where I usually buy that sort of things. I will google them...

Re: Buttons?

I've seen Favorite Findings at Jo_Anns.

As for snaps, Snap Source has said that they are certified lead and phthalate free. I'm still trying to find out about zippers myself.

Re: Buttons?

How about mother of purl and corozo buttons? Corozo is a nut found in the rainforest and is getting popular with manufacturers who want natural buttons for their organic lines.

Re: Buttons?

I'm confused. I'm not seeing any children's items in your shop at all.

This law only applies to products that are specifically for children ages 0-12.

You can use any button you like on non-children's items.

Or am I missing something here?

Re: Buttons?

I've been wondering about buttons too and found this shop, they have a pretty good selection of wooden buttons (and I think they are unfinished) http://www.caseyswood.com/shoppingcart/zen-cart/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=103&zenid=b55c91fe11...

Re: Buttons?

I haven't read the entire thread but have a question.
Are genuine shell mother of pearl buttons acceptable on baby items?. This would bring us back to the old vintage buttons. Older baby items were always closed with shell buttons. No lead or phtalates in these.

Wood buttons will definitely be lead free... or no?

Re: Buttons?

I was just at my local Joanns. They had quite a number of wood buttons. They don't seem to be washable, only dry cleanable.

As far as vintage buttons, it is my understanding that some of the worst offenders for lead are the vintage buttons.

I'm trying to eliminate buttons from my designs.
