Buttons?

ok so if i knit or crochet a item of yarn I am good, but what the heck am i supposed to use for buttons or what not. I know wood is ok plain not painted or treated. But other than chopping down the trees around my house to make "safe" buttons.. (other than splinters LOL) what do you guys use? Any thoughts would be really helpful.. thanks

For zippers I contacted YKK and they said their products do not have lead, here is their email:

" I received your request for Certificates of Compliance to the CPSIA requirements for YKK products.

Wow, that's good to know about the zippers. YKK make a lot of them. Now, if I could just perfect putting them in...LOL!
