Upcycling Craft Ideas

We go through pens really fast at work. I've been trying to think of something fun to make with them.

I've heard that the empty barrels can be cut into beads.

Does anyone have other ideas?

Re: Upcycling Craft Ideas

Hi, Christie -- I saw the link in my digest and went to see the ideas, but I hate the continuous photo option so many of the sites use... I didn't want to pursue it... Can you describe some of the ones you thought were the best?

I did happen to see a really great idea at the top of the page when I went there... a homemade "lunchable" container !!! How ingenious to think of that. The glass bottom would be a hazard for kids, but what a great idea!

Someone took a canning jar and made it the bottom of the lunchable container. Then you would put the metal lid on. Then you would put your crackers (or whatever) on top of the metal lid. Then you would take a plastic container, like the ones from the individual fruit servings for lunches, and turn it upside down over the crackers! When you put the canning ring on, it all seals together!!

Such a great idea for so many uses !!! Use clean everything and it can become your packaging for a food item -- with "sprinkles" or something hidden in the top section.

The jar was small, like the squarish one that is the wide mouth version of the 4 ounce jar.

I hope you share some of the ideas you thought were fantastic in the GH magazine.

Here are some great ideas for reusing cardboard. The cat scratcher video was my favorite (idea #4).

Re: Upcycling Craft Ideas

Hi, again, Christie... was browsing in the "wee hours" and came to see the Freecyclers team... followed the link to the pen lamp and discovered Flickr (joined to comment :-).

Flickr looks like a great photo option. Can you tell me your opinions about it. I noticed you can create books and posters with your photos... Is that something you can sell at Etsy?

I also discovered their Christian group for free wallpapers.

I don't know how I am going to be able to add more groups/teams to my activities, but it looks like a possible income option for the future... thanks for sharing the link !!

I was amazed by the lamp shade out of pens. I am always impressed by the things other people create. I hope I can one day be as creative !!

Hi Deoborah :) Thank you for your comment on flickr!

It sounds like you already know more than I do about that site. I've only used it to share photos with others, especially since we can't post them in the threads here.

Look at what you can do with a mailing tube instead of throwing it away:

This is an adorable and useful post by Stacy Barr about common items to reuse at home. I do a lot of her suggestions already and I love her creativity. Check it out:

Re: Upcycling Craft Ideas

You're correct about making beads from cutting them to desired lengths.  I also pop the ink tube in an airtight container & later make alcohol ink from whatever is left them.  Oddly enough, black turns into a muted purple color & red becomes a vivid fuchsia tone.
May I ask, are you using clear tube pens, or the opaque casing that unscrews in the center?
