After someone posted a question asking if people say thank you after receiving feedback, it got me thinking. Do you send a message/convo after you have received an order? I do. I send something like "Thank you for your purchase. I'll be working on your ___________ this week and will let you know when it has shipped. Please let me know if you have any questions." Considering how so many people thought excessive emails thanking customers was Spamming, I'm wondering if sending a confirmation email is too much. What are your thoughts? I guess I just wanted to reassure people that I got their purchase request and am working on it. ?????

Re: do you confirm an order?

I only confirm if the item is an extra large. I have shipped too many XL when the person really wanted a normal sized item and didn't read the text.

Re: do you confirm an order?

I always confirm an order and I also thank people who leave positive feedback. I get lots of comments on "good communication" so I that the majority of buyers appreciate it.

Re: do you confirm an order?

I also send a message. I thank the buyer for their order, let them know when I will ship it and confirm a size change they may have requested in the note to seller.

Re: do you confirm an order?

Thanking a customer for their purchase has nothing to do with spam.
It is a valuable part of doing business in person.

If you bought something in a b&m shop (preferably one where the owner is also the maker of the products), would you consider it spam if they said 'thank you for your purchase!' while handing over your package? Or, in case of an order, would you consider it spam when they thanked you for your order and told you when you will receive it?

Spam is using the customer's contact info outside of a transaction-situation. Spam is unwanted contact.
You thanking your customer and telling them when they will receive their package is not unwanted information.

Re: do you confirm an order?

I don't send a thank you for your order message for my digital downloads but I do for everything else I sell online. I personally prefer to have it acknowledged if I have paid someone money for an item so I do for my customers what I would like done for me. :-)

Re: do you confirm an order?

I do sent a convo. I found out most of my customers are from the States and expect an item within days (no one reads from where the item will be shipped), so I inform them that it's an international order. I also thank them for buying in my shop. They can still ignore my convo if they like.

Re: do you confirm an order?

I do acknowledge all sells and let my customers know that their order is being processed! It works for me and I hate when I make an Etsy purchase and I'm left wondering if anyone is monitoring that shop. I've made a few purchases where I got no response and then the package just shows up at a later date! Even the big retailers send an order confirmation.

Re: do you confirm an order?

I like to send a convo after an order has been placed to say, "thank you" and let them know when I plan to email them their file. If the order is placed during the work day when I'm at my desk, I usually don't since they'll have their file within a few hours anyway.

If someone orders over the weekend or in the evening (especially my international customers), I like to send them a convo to let them know when I plan on emailing their order since I don't work evenings and weekends. A lot of times my emails are blocked, so it's also nice for them to have a heads up so they know to look for it.

I tell my customers thank you as many times as possible, in the initial convo and in each email because I do very much appreciate their choice to work with me. They could have picked another shop, but they chose to purchase from me so I like to be as polite as possible.

My husband just purchased from Etsy for the first time a few weeks ago, and said that the owner didn't once say, "thank you for your purchase." Not in a confirmation email, or in the shipment. I was a little put off by that when he told me...

Re: do you confirm an order?

I always confirm my orders, give the buyer an estimated ship date and also ask how they found my shop. Since I use several forms of social media to promote I like to find out what works best for me. So far searches within Etsy is where I get most of my customers.

Re: do you confirm an order?

Me too Alisia. I think it's only polite to acknowledge someone has made a purchase. I always feel honored that out of all the shops on Etsy they picked me!

Re: do you confirm an order?

I only send a confirmation if the buyer has sent me a message or left a note on the order asking for an alteration, to let them know that I've seen it and that it can be done, and whether or not I'll need extra charge (usually not), OR if the seller is very obviously new to Etsy. The buyer receives an automatic confirmation message anyway so it's not entirely necessary, but around Christmas when everyone is very busy, it's a good idea to let them know, whoever they are, that you've seen their order and will be able to post it by X date or something.

Re: do you confirm an order?

If I can't ship the package within 24 hours, I send an email to let them know I haven't forgotten them and when to expect their package to go in the mail. I do personalize the note that goes out with the delivery confirmation.

Yes, I do. I send email confirmation as soon as I see the order.

Re: do you confirm an order?

I also rely on the automatic order confirmation. I also put a quick "thank-you" as well a brief shipping info in the "Mark As Shipped" email. No need for overkill imo.

Re: do you confirm an order?

There is an automatic email you can set up to say whatever you want that gets sent to all buyers after they make a purchase.. I think sending yet ANOTHER confirmation email is unnecessary and maybe even a little bit annoying?

Re: do you confirm an order?

No.
Most often if I don't receive fb from a customer, I have already received a personal email.
Our fb system is not only flawed but its "leftover" from the ebay system. It feels forced.....if you were to make a purchase at Macy's do you then stand around and comment about each item you've purchased?

Re: do you confirm an order?

I just have a little message included in the email Etsy sends out with the transaction confirmation: Thank you for ordering from Franny & Franky Designs! We are hard at work creating your order for you. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to reach out. We hope you love your purchase!

And then since I always use Etsy for shipping labels, they get that email confirmation with this message from me:
Your order is shipping soon! Thanks for purchasing!

I feel like anything more is overkill. I hate getting a bajillion emails, so I just go with that combined one.

Re: do you confirm an order?

Most of my items are ready to ship, and my made to order items go out the next day ... so I don't send a thank you convo. I think it would be too much between the auto response after purchase and shipment notice, since they come within 2-24 hours of each other.

However, as many of you said, if it was a made to order item with a longer processing time - I would send a note letting them know my timing.

Re: do you confirm an order?

I don't ... because my things are ready to ship and go out either that day (for early in the day purchases) or the next day at the latest. I thank the customer when I provide the tracking number. This has worked well for me!

Re: do you confirm an order?

I always send a confirmation after. To thank them personally and let them know that I'm working on order, to see if they left anything out, like if the item is a gift, but mostly to make sure there is open communication. I want to know that they are able to get emails coming from me and Etsy, so in case an issue comes up later, I know the lines of communication were open.

Re: do you confirm an order?

I thank them and confirm the address. I've heard horror stories about people moving and not updating their account. It takes a minute to make sure the order is going to the right place. I could take hours to unravel a mis-delivered package.
