Hi teammates,

You guys have some super creative shop names that I love, but I often find myself wondering what the story behind them is. What do you like about your shop name? How does it relate to your business? Is there a funny anecdote behind it? Is it a pun? Is it a tribute to someone special to you? Did you have a different name before switching to your current one? How do you think customers interpret your name?

I'll go first. I got the name Sassafras from a good friend of mine who always called me Sassafras when I said anything that was a little snarky. I also have a passion for botany, so a plant name just felt like a perfect fit for me.

Now it's your turn. Share your stories and thoughts in this thread!

Re: What's the story behind your shop name?

Some of the stories behind the names can really make you emotional (laugh and sometimes cry). Mine is actually quite simple. I wanted a name from you immediately know what I sell: cute crochet. The "NL" is incorporated, because my website-url ends with ".nl" since I live in The Netherlands. Also, to stand out a bit more, since the name 'cutecrochet' is not very unique by itself. I felt the need to really express that my shop is the one from The Netherlands.

Mine is simple as well, a leaf, for plant based ingredients, and a lantern, another way of using light.

Re: What's the story behind your shop name?

I am Sarah, Italian freelance illustrator living in France.
I sell illustrations, prints, totes and wooden letters in my shop "CIACIO".

**Why the shop's name "Ciacio"..?**
Ciacio is a character that I created inspiring to my childhood favourite puppet, a funny mix between bunny and bear! I still have Ciacio and it travels with me, the photos are on our blog: http://mynameisciacio.blogspot.com/ ;)
Ciacio is also the protagonist of my published children books and of an important part of my artistic production.

Hi everyone, I'm Gisella. I just opened my second Etsy store, HandmadetoAdore and my first store is VintagetoAdore.

I'm a graphic designer/decorative painter by trade, just got my interior design degree a few years ago. I created my business names to show my appreciation for the arts and allow me to showcase a variety of items in each Etsy store.

Re: What's the story behind your shop name?

Before I got into sewing I was into several different crafts. One day while cruising through a renaissance festival, as I often do, (let my nerd flag fly!) I looked around and thought Wow I could make this stuff for a fraction of what they're all charging!

My boyfriend and I went through many many names. Potential names we had were, Stitcheded, Fantasy Stitches, Stitchums.... Something with STITCH because that's a callsign I received in one of my groups. Anyways, one day he said what about "FaireFashion" ? And I was sold.

Anticlimactic but true haha

Hi Im Sara

Ive always loved making jewellery , first starting when my children were little and doing school fairs at Christmas Easter etc . I then had to return to full time work after my husband and I split so all this was put on hold for a while .

About a year ago my sister started making all sorts of quilted bags , so between us we decided to start up Andiyacrafts. Andiya is an anagram of part of our middle names , me being Diane and hers being Anne. The "y" was just an addition to make it look good !

Nick my sister unfortunately decided it wasnt for her.. she likes the easy life !!! so I stuck with it and am doing jewellery on my own, and really want this venture to succeed as I love what I do .

Re: What's the story behind your shop name?

My shop is about maps and the drawing of maps. Since cartography is not an easy name to have (others got to it first!) I drew a bit of inspiration from German where paper/card (Karte) and graphic could be melded together to form Kartegraphik.

More narcissisticaly I like Ks since my name starts with a K. But I couldn't pass up a dual language pun!

Re: What's the story behind your shop name?

WHAT'S WITH THE NAME TRASH FIND REDESIGNED...

It all began a few years ago when I would pick up items from my neighbor's trash piles. I'd sneak the items home, refinish and redesign them with help from my soon to be daughter-in-law, then return them secretly back to the owner. Nope, we never did get caught! One of my trash finds was even featured on ABC Good Afternoon America with Lara Spencer and Josh Elliot.

HOW THE WHOLE WEDDING DECOR IDEA BEGAN...

That same "trash find" summer, my son and fiancee announced their engagement. They quickly decided on a rustic/country themed wedding. Well, h.e.l.l.o... That was right up my alley! I made everything from pallet wood signs, to rustic tool box flower pots, to a wine cart using vintage barn rakes to hold the wine glasses - And that was just for the engagement party. For the wedding I trash picked and repurposed and old mailbox for "The Wedding Cards Table" and found a vintage suitcase to house the wedding programs. I made several pallet wood signs and many other fun wedding props.

Once the wedding festivities were over, I found myself wishing I could do it all over again. I really missed making the wedding decor and felt kind of helpless and lost. Hmm, how could I keep doing what I really love to do.

Remembering that my daughter-in-law bought several items on ETSY for the bridal & wedding festivities, I decided to look into selling some of my own handmade wedding items on ETSY. I already had an account so it was very easy to get started.

That's it!

Re: What's the story behind your shop name?

When my oldest daughter was only 2, she named her feet. One foot was Boss, the other one was Michael. When we would get after her for kicking she would say, "It's not me, it's Boss and Michael." So I guess you can say my shop is named after feet.

Re: What's the story behind your shop name?

According to the Oxford English dictionary flaunt, as a verb, means "to display oneself or one's finery; show off, parade", a word of unknown origin in common use since the 16th century. Seemed appropriate for a jewelry shop, especially since my own origins are also in olde England :)

Re: What's the story behind your shop name?

Such great stories!

Mine is fairly simple. My daughter and I are as close as can be and she was the one that inspired me (practically forced me) to open up a shop where I could show the world my creations. The first N comes from Nena (my name), and the second one comes from my daughter's name Nayeli. And that is how N&N Boutique was born!

Re: What's the story behind your shop name?

"Pracownia" in English means "studio". And "Plum" in my shop name is not for the fruit. "Plum" is the polish word that describes the sound, which you can hear while throwing something into the liquid - for example cherry into the glass of compote;) This sound always make me and my family smile, and I thought it would make a nice shop name.

Re: What's the story behind your shop name?

Hi guys, I have loved reading all of the stories behind the names, they are as individual as the artistry from each of you. For me the name is my middle name and my birth name together because although nobody knows me by that name I wanted something which reflected my history incorporated into life today. Like my designs, I try to incorporate a vintage item into each piece to reflect how our lives change but are made up of our history as well as our present creating a new story for each of us. Probably would have been smarter to go with something more SEO friendly. lol Cheers Kim

Don’t mind the raindrops, wait till the rain stops
Smile through your tears, laughing at life
– Billie Holiday –

These words have been in my head for years (it’s also my ringtone, so that explains..).

Living in The Netherlands, famous for its tulips, cyclists and well.. RAIN, the ‘raindrop theme’ quickly came to mind. Taking it one step further by including an alliteration in the form of stillae, the Latin name for raindrop, and we’ve got Studio Stillae!

Re: What's the story behind your shop name?

I originally just added my name without a lot of thought behind it because I really didn't know any better. lol. I've often thought of changing it, but now that I've been on here so long, it's probably not a good idea. I guess I don't have to worry about anyone else having the same shop name!!;)

Re: What's the story behind your shop name?

My shop's name is Koduni - The root of the word Koduni is 'kodu' which means 'home' in the Estonian language.

It is a shop and home for handmade items, designs and artworks by me - and so whether the items are something for your house, something you wear, or something you carry with you, my hope is that they add to the feeling of home in one's life.

Re: What's the story behind your shop name?

Hi there!

Our designs are all about flowers, so we wanted to add some flowering to our shop/brand name as well. After some brainstorming and research we found a latin word Florentes which means 'flowering', 'blossoming' and it fit just perfect. Now, even our brides like to call our headpieces 'florentes' instead of using word 'accessory'!

Re: What's the story behind your shop name?

Hello Everyone,

I just joined a few minutes ago, my shop name is Enchanted Chattel and my story is titled "The Birth of Enchanted Chattel".

It started about a year ago. I, Annette, was a single parent barely able to feed my three children. One month later I met a nice man, it was love at first sight for both of us. We would get together every weekend and talk a lot about each other. His hobby was beading making necklaces and earrings. A few months ago on our 6 month anniversary of our meeting each other he asked me to be his wife.

My fiancee showed me some of his bead work and I was amazed of the jewelry one can make with beads and a little imagination. He started teaching me a little about beading and I started thinking about designing some of my own jewelry. I've always loved reading about the Aztecs and Native American lore. I've always felt that I was psychic and thought that nature has wonderful plants, stones, and beauty that has an effect on humans. So I started incorporating these elements in my designs.

My fiancee liked my designs so we decided to start a business to sell our designs. The first shop name that we thought of before joining Etsy was Enchanted Things but found out that name was used a lot. So my fiancee said why not call it Enchanted Chattel and told me that chattel was a synonym for things. We looked to see if it was used as a business name in our state and found out it wasn't. Thus, our shop name became Enchanted Chattel and our friends say our shop name fits our personalities "a little bit out there but smart". I suppose that's what we are together. Thus, Enchanted Chattel was born.

Re: What's the story behind your shop name?

Hello Everyone

The name of my store is IntiTagua, it comes from the quechua language spoken by indigineous people in Ecuador.

Inti means Sun
Tagua means ivoy palm

I sell ecofriendly beads from the nut or seed of the Tagua palm tree aka vegetable ivory of Ecuador in SouthAmerica. It is called vegetable ivory because the seed after it is polished looks like animals' ivory that we hope reduce the slaughter of elphants.

At the beginning I chose a different name mujubeads. Muju means seed. I find out that for some cultures is bad luck, additional the word Muju is used by other businesses online.

The words Inti and Tagua are part of my heritage, and I want more people to know about Tagua, and many other different seeds that can be used to design jewelry or any creative design.

Tagua for me is a reminder of good times with my family, when I sat down and watched my mother working with it. With her creative designs, she helped my father support our family.

Because of my mother, I immediately thought about opening a store on Etsy to help my family the way she did. I have epilepsy, and I stay home because I cannot drive. I would like to help my family, and I hope my store helps me do that and grows overtime

It is wonderful to work with a material that comes from the earth and it is ecofriendly.

Tagua is a material that brings hope to many and helps many; Artisans in Ecuador try to make a living selling tagua jewelry, and many people around the world are able to design wonderful items.

Greetings
Ana

Re: What's the story behind your shop name?

Hello everybody!!!

This is my story. When I got pregnant with my second child and learned that I would have a daughter, I wanted to do something beautiful, bright, light and kind for her. So my handmade began. When I decided to open a shop, I had no doubt how to name my shop. My surname “Mezerya” means "who does good" and I wanted to share a little bit of that goodness with people through my work so my shop`s name is MezeryaHandMade)))

Welcome)))

Re: What's the story behind your shop name?

The story behind my logo is an odd one, but true. There was a hollow tree, at the corner my families property when I was a kid and I could hide away for awhile in it. Imagining I had my own studio in the hollow tree!

Later when I worked for a printer, I was doing rough sketches of a girl in a tree, more I drew the more I realized that was me! The logo was born!

I still love trees, hollow or otherwise, to draw!

So many imaginative names and interesting stories behind them!

As for my own, I write a blog that features my shop, and last September's topic focused on my shop's name. Here's a link to that blog post:
