Open Studio?

I have just received an email from a local buyer wanting to know what shops they can view my pieces in person. I have yet to delve into consignment, and don't have anything in shops. I have a small, (messy!) studio in the front of my apt. Would it be appropriate to have an open studio with a local etsy buyer? I have opened my studio before, but only to friends and family. has anyone else ever had this question asked? Also I make my jewelry off of sample pieces when it is ordered out of my shop, so nothing is "take home ready".

Re: Open Studio?

I did a big job last year helping to decorate a resturant and the clients wanted a meeting. They suggested to come to the studio I was freaked out as it was and still is total organized chaos but they loved it I think they thought they were in like a real boho scene and it also let me show them all of my stuff which was something my portfolio doesnt even show like 20% of. Plus I had done preliminary work had it all up on the walls and they felt like they were part of the design process. It was cool x

Re: Open Studio?

I'd definitely do it, mess and all. Last year I worked like heck to clean out my studio for open studios and the first person that came in said: "Wow, this is so clean, do you paint in here?") Last time I'm cleaning my studio :)

Re: Open Studio?

i have on occasion opened my studio.....willingly and unwillingly.
i think people are fascinated to be in someone's studio, and it connects them with you and makes them respect you more.

However, if you want bigger or wholesale clients, that you hold off on that until such time as you can present something more professional. Like on the featured sellers and quit your day job photos. Notice, their studios are all very clean neat and orderly. I only saw one shot of a messy soapmaker's studio. and I really appreciated that one! (if you could only see mine on "colorful days" lol.....
