How to add shipping fees after sale

Someone just bought a brooch and paid for it through Direct Pay. Now she says she needs it by the 10th. There's no way unless I send it Priority. Unfortunately I ship 1st class and I'll need an additional $2.75.

Is there any way to invoice her for additional shipping? Otherwise, I guess I'd need to cancel the transaction, refund her and start over. I'm guessing Etsy would need a waiting period for a credit card pmt refund. It's not a big transaction and a couple dollars aren't major, but at the same time, she's already getting a good deal on it. Not sure what to do at this point.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Re: How to add shipping fees after sale

Diane, you can invoice your customer through PayPal.
I think you will need to add in the charges that PayPal will charge YOU for the service , however. So it will be $2.75 plus the PayPal fees.

OR

You can set up a Shipping Upgrade Listing on Etsy, as CUSTOM LISTING FOR ______.
You will need to charge her the additional shipping amount plus the Etsy fee for the listing ( .20) and Etsy sales fee.

Thanks so much for the info. I don't know if she has a Paypal acct, but I think I figured out how to make a custom listing.

I'll get back to her and see what she wants to do. Thanks again.

Diane,
She doesn't need to have a PayPal account to pay a PayPal invoice. All you have to do is create a PayPal invoice and send it to her email address. She can pa with her credit card without having an account.

Re: How to add shipping fees after sale

I didn't know that. This is great info. Now I'll know what to do next time,,,,and there will be a next time. It's about the third buyer that paid for an item, then said they wanted it in 2 days.

I'll have to add something to my payment policy to explain it better.

Thanks.

Re: How to add shipping fees after sale

For future reference: YOU run this shop. Don't feel obliged to grant every possible wish of your (potential) customers.
I assume your listing had an estimated shipping time and she bought it. Period. If she wanted it sooner, she should have bought it sooner.
So, politely explain to her what the shipping time is (that she already paid for) and if she doesn't want it to arrive that 'late', simply cancel the transaction.
Don't let customers boss you around.
If she had politely asked up front, you might have worked things out with her. But don't take orders after a transaction.

Re: How to add shipping fees after sale

Hi Diane,

You run your shop whatever way you want to, but good customer service gives you repeat buyers. The work of customer service is integral part of a good business. You are not doing anyone a favor, keeping customers happy is part of your job (do whatever is reasonable).

To make your life easier I would create shipping profiles and link them to your listings. This way whenever you have to make shipping cost changes it will be a cinch. Make sure you add processing time so your customers know when to expect you to ship. Most customers don't read this, but this safe guards you and saves you time with the customers that do read. A major help for my shop was to add shipping upgrades. Customers that need it faster can automatically choose Priority Shipping and I don't have to do any work. Less head ache and saves me a ton of time.

Good luck!

Re: How to add shipping fees after sale

One way to avoid this in the future is to set up your shipping profiles with the shipping upgrades already listed.

If you want the option to add shipping upgrades simply go to
https://www.etsy.com/your/shops/me/options
and activate the option.

Re: How to add shipping fees after sale

Thanks for all the advice. I ended up making a custom fee listing. My buyer paid and I shipped her brooch. Pretty easy to do.

Now to check out shipping upgrades.
