How are you handling the new comments limit?

I saw a treasury last night that was an angry response to what is supposedly Etsy's new policy that we're limited to making 100 comments per day. Then this morning, as I was fulfilling my agreements on my teams, I saw that some people had been stopped from further commenting, allegedly because they had exceeded their numbers limit.

This puts many of us in a dilemma. If we're on several teams that have a comment commitment, and we run through those treasuries every day (as asked), then we very quickly run up our comments. I suppose on the one hand it relieves us of the need to comment more than once on a treasury, but it also limits our ability to lend support to the curators.

Can someone from Etsy or the upper echelons comment on why this limit, and how you would like us to handle our team commitments? Frankly, it's not a policy that makes sense to sellers unless you can explain the reasoning behind it.

Anyone?

Re: How are you handling the new comments limit?

I'm guessing they wanted to avoid spammers? But can't you make a comment as spam anyway? I can't think of any other reason.

It definitely doesn't help people who are active in teams.....

Re: How are you handling the new comments limit?

I don't have time to make 100 comments a day so it won't bother me.

Re: How are you handling the new comments limit?

I understand that they're doing it to prevent spambots and such, but I think they should raise it. I personally don't comment that much on treasuries, but I know there are a lot of treasury teams where people are expected to comment that much. If they really want to prevent spam, they should raise the limit to beyond what a normal person would be able to do. Also, I've never noticed a problem with spam in treasury comments.

Re: How are you handling the new comments limit?

I don't know.. I was once on a quite a few treasury teams but 100 comments a day still seems like a lot. I mean, that is 10 teams with a 10 comment rule. And stuff like that does kind of just make the person who is a part of the most teams get their treasury noticed rather than the person with the best treasury. So I think the limit is fair enough.

Re: How are you handling the new comments limit?

I think that will create major problem in the feed since people will move to 'hearting' treasuries instead.....
Go and look on the FP of the treasuries.....

Re: How are you handling the new comments limit?

personally i feel that teams that demand a comment commitment are spamming and gamiing the system so for me, this new rule makes sense. yes, i am aware of the booing and hissing aimed at me right now by those who love this system--and that's okay, it's just my opinion ;-)

and it is what it is.... i can't imagine leaving 100 comments a day...i am busy enough in the studio or meeting writing deadlines....

Re: How are you handling the new comments limit?

I think they've been coming across a lot of people who copy and paste the same comment onto every treasury, which kind of defeats the purpose of commenting at all. It creates too much noise on the site and makes people on teams the only ones who have a shot at FP.

Re: How are you handling the new comments limit?

If I'm featured in a treasury I heart and comment. I find it the polite thing to do since the curator has taken time to search and build a treasury.

Having done a couple myself; treasuries are a bit of work to gather the theme together and get the right "look". I appreciate when I'm thanked and I think others do too.

Luckily I don't think I would ever reach the 100 comments a day limit, however for those who are very active I can see it as a restriction.

Perhaps what others have said is true, an effort to keep spamming to a minimum?

Re: How are you handling the new comments limit?

I think new shops don't have a chance to get anywhere unless they make treasuries, comment on them and that gives them a chance to be seen and discovered on Etsy.

Re: How are you handling the new comments limit?

Regarding a comment limit I can't imagine anyone limiting comments on 'social media' to let's say : two per friend...lol..

Re: How are you handling the new comments limit?

Our leadership group is having to review our team requirements because as a promotional team, we did have this rule about commenting on the treasuries posted prior to your own. There will be no way for us to "monitor" our own rules on the team threads. Yet we say our purpose is to support each team member.

Another team just last week honored one person's shop by making treasuries and it was a whole lot of fun. She received 92 treasuries that day. She wrote back a lovely comment on everyone one - sometimes twice so I know she ran over 100 in her one day on Etsy.

Personally, I believe any change that affects a community needs to have some notice and explanation attached to it. This was not the case. True, the actual number per individual user may be sufficient but the point is there are other conditions that have to be dealt with on a team level which we have to handle, not Etsy admin.

And although I know nothing about BNS/BNR teams or treasuries, the impact there seems to be great. Guess there will be a lot of team changes made. This is very sad ineed.

Re: How are you handling the new comments limit?

I agree, Valerie !
This will prevent captains from running their teams effectively as well.
It creates more work, more chaos and people will just use different tools..
How about people who are in many treasuries ? Do they have to chose between team work and saying thank you to the curators...?
I thought Etsy was encouraging activity of their members....

Re: How are you handling the new comments limit?

I can't imagine having enough time to comment 100 times a day. I'm lucky to hit 25! My twin boys always come before my time on the computer so I have to drop things and run a lot!

Re: How are you handling the new comments limit?

There is no reason to apply that anyone who posts close to 100 has too much time on their hands.
People have different lives ,different preferences and are less or more active in the different venue. They have their Etsy business at different stages as well.
I don't have twins so I run four teams..:)

Re: How are you handling the new comments limit?

There should be no restriction on how people promote, chat, interact as long as it is done with no spam .
I feel that what people do with their time is their own preference and they should not be judged for this.If you don't like to comment that is your own preference as well.
I have no idea how BNR 's work but I feel that people who like them pay their fees and have right to divide their time as they want.

Re: How are you handling the new comments limit?

I easily hit that and more each day. I'm very active on teams and I like to support others as well as make my own treasury lists.

Have any of you ever seen spambots? I've had a couple etsy sellers spam my treasury list with links to their own, but that is few and far between. I'm just surprised on the limit now because I've never even seen spam as a real problem.

Re: How are you handling the new comments limit?

Another change that I knew nothing about. Do they post these anywhere and doesn't Etsy have more important things to address than the number of comments on treasuries?

Re: How are you handling the new comments limit?

I have no idea how the 'spambot' treasury comment looks like...and I see many treasuries per day on the different teams..

I find that curators quickly delete any spam since that makes them very angry..

Re: How are you handling the new comments limit?

I have never even made 50 comments in one day! This probably won't be a problem for me. I'm sorry to see it will be a problem for others though ;( Etsy will probably come up with a solution (it seems like they usually do).

Re: How are you handling the new comments limit?

I'm very active in supporting other sellers. I don't captain a team but I do mentor several people with "young" shops. This is a form of paying it forward for me, something I heard a lot about in yesterday's symposium, and was happy to hear because I think it's generally a good way to participate in a community of worldwide artists.

So I was frankly shocked when I saw the angry treasury posted last night and almost didn't know how to react. At first I thought it should be taken down as inappropriate. Then I actually started to read down through the comments of the many, many people who are directly impacted by this limit, and I changed my mind.

I personally will probably slip in under the wire, so long as I don't double-comment on treasuries that are posted in more than one of my teams. I can always heart or favorite them as a way to show support. But having read how much chaos this will create for team captains and some sellers in particular, I'd really like to know what the reasoning was behind such a decision.

I've never seen anyone abuse their right to comment. I'm not in any of the BNR/BNS teams, but everyone I know apppreciates all the support they get, and gives as much as they can, given their individual family and work circumstances.

So I'm saying...this hurts people. I don't understand why it's being done. It seems unfair since we all pay for our shops on Etsy, and this is one of the times it seems to me Etsy admin needs to show up and tell the truth.

Couldn't hurt. Might help.

Etsy? The ball's in your court.
