I recognize that many people don't know how to use the Google Adwords Keyword Planner So I decided to give a tutorial. Everyone wants good SEO and this is a good way to research keywords phrases not only for your titles, but also for your tags.

1. Make an Google account (it's free) or sign in f you already have one.
2. Go to the TOOL tab and drop down to KEYWORD PLANNER
3. Go to SEARCH FOR NEW KEYWORD AND GROUP IDEAS
4 Go down to the third box that says PRODUCT CATEGORY and put in your product or follow the subcategories.
5. Go to the first box YOUR PRODUCT OR SERVICE and enter in any ideas you have for your item. You must hit enter after each idea.
6. Go to TARGETING and click on Google if you want Google and Search Partners
7. OPTIONAL:Then go to the gray box that says KEYWORD OPTIONS and click on the pencil icon. Turn on the top option that says "Only show ideas closely related to my search terms".
USE THIS FLAG: 1) when you want to only see suggestions very close to the keywords you entered. Do not check this flag if you want to see a larger variety of keywords.
2) The Broad search count should only be used as a guideline to see which keywords are more popular than others. Google no longer shows the Exact search count that would tell use exactly how often each keyword phrase was used each month.

8. Then click on the blue box that says GET IDEAS.

You will then see 2 tabs. The first one AD GROUP IDEAS gives you keyword phrases and their average monthly searches and subcategories. The second one KEYWORD IDEAS show you all the ideas you entered and a general monthly search averages.

Don't worry about the Competition (low, medium, high) as it only pertains to businesses paying for Google ads.

Also up at the top of the page you will see your product or service ideas (all the ideas you entered for your item(s). To the right you can MODIFY SEARCH. When you click on that, it will bring you back to your original ideas so you can eliminate or add more ideas.

I hope this helps everyone with their SEO.

HI Barbara,
A lot of infant shoes are made of cloth or other soft fibers. I think it would work if you included the word(s) "knit" or "hand knit" before the rest of the keyword phrase, as in "Knit Newborn Baby Shoes 0-3 months" or "Hand Knit Newborn Baby Shoes 0-3 months."

I have been using google adwords to revise my listings. I have put only phrases that are searched for in my titles..so far, fewer views. Am I overdoing it now? I have never had lots of views but would get 30-40..now single digits. Was hoping to get some google searches. Thanks for your help!

Rosemary,

You should see a row of text links near the top of the google adwords web page, like this: Home, Campaigns, Opportunities and Tools. Tools is on the right.

I can't get past the payment info in Google adwords. :( I've used the back button to back out and then log back in and it always takes me right back to the "how do you want to pay" page. I really don't want to give them my credit card number, but I don't see how to get past the payment page without giving them the info.

Well, that's interesting. I opened a new gmail account and was able to easily open an adwords account without giving the cc info. It seems once you get stuck in the payment request loop, you can't get out. So, if anyone else can't get past the payment page, open a new gmail account and start fresh.

I was having trouble getting into Adwords just like a commenter stated several posts up. Kept asking for a CC to set up a campaign. Not quite ready for campaigns just yet, sooo...

In desperation, I googled "google keyword tool," found the appropriate link and went right to where I needed to be. Of course, I did have to be signed into my google account. Not sure why it made sense to utilize the search of the very place I was trying to get into. But it did.
Though, the main thing is - I got in.

Ron that's interesting. Usually you can put in all of your CC info and then suspend it before running the ad.

This has helped a lot and I am working on going to adword and working on titles and tags. I have journals, notebooks and I can not find the right category, I think I found it once and can't find it again. Can you help me know what category to put? THanks!

Sarah,

You might want to try these options: Stationery, Calendars and Planners, or Occasions and Gifts. I'm sure they would work fine for your items.

Any tips for key words or word groups that are longer than what etsy allows? How does that work?
For example" Antique Victorian Jewelry" is too many characters. Is using "Antique Victorian" helpful or not really?

Emily.

Actually it does, If you enter that keyword into Etsy's search bar, you will find over 146,000 listings with that keyword. So I would put it into 2 keywords- antique Victorian and Victorian jewelry.

Re: How to use Google Adwords Keyword Planner

Hi Mary,

I am new to the team. Thank you for all this information.

1. Is it not necessary to repeat our listing categories in our tags? For example, my listings categorized as home and living<bedding<blankets and throws<quilts. Should I repeat any of those words? Does it make a difference?

2. When I do a google search on "handmade quilts for sale" I see Etsy and click on the link. There are some sellers that are towards the top that have not had many sales; and then those who have a lot of sales. How does this work? Is it that they are paying a lot for promotions?

Thank you so much for your expertise.

Michele

Re: How to use Google Adwords Keyword Planner

For anyone that gets frustrated, my advice is just to stick with it. I went through all 23 pages, clicked on every possible link, and kept trying to create an account without using my CC. In the end I had to, then immediately deactivated my CC ... it still wouldn't let me in.
JUST when I was about to give up and list everything I did, I decided to log on one more time, and it was almost as if the campaign needed to have time to create before letting me be able to see the tools tab.
Now, Mary's blog post "Talking Shop..." is helping me greatly with how to refine searches. A lot to learn, but glad I stuck with it. Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to comment and help!

I am trying to figure out how to create search words for my Yoga Rocks, but I guess they aren't in high demand, because my search words aren't turning up much. :)
