I recognize that many people don't know how to use the Google Adwords Keyword Planner So I decided to give a tutorial. Everyone wants good SEO and this is a good way to research keywords phrases not only for your titles, but also for your tags.

1. Make an Google account (it's free) or sign in f you already have one.
2. Go to the TOOL tab and drop down to KEYWORD PLANNER
3. Go to SEARCH FOR NEW KEYWORD AND GROUP IDEAS
4 Go down to the third box that says PRODUCT CATEGORY and put in your product or follow the subcategories.
5. Go to the first box YOUR PRODUCT OR SERVICE and enter in any ideas you have for your item. You must hit enter after each idea.
6. Go to TARGETING and click on Google if you want Google and Search Partners
7. OPTIONAL:Then go to the gray box that says KEYWORD OPTIONS and click on the pencil icon. Turn on the top option that says "Only show ideas closely related to my search terms".
USE THIS FLAG: 1) when you want to only see suggestions very close to the keywords you entered. Do not check this flag if you want to see a larger variety of keywords.
2) The Broad search count should only be used as a guideline to see which keywords are more popular than others. Google no longer shows the Exact search count that would tell use exactly how often each keyword phrase was used each month.

8. Then click on the blue box that says GET IDEAS.

You will then see 2 tabs. The first one AD GROUP IDEAS gives you keyword phrases and their average monthly searches and subcategories. The second one KEYWORD IDEAS show you all the ideas you entered and a general monthly search averages.

Don't worry about the Competition (low, medium, high) as it only pertains to businesses paying for Google ads.

Also up at the top of the page you will see your product or service ideas (all the ideas you entered for your item(s). To the right you can MODIFY SEARCH. When you click on that, it will bring you back to your original ideas so you can eliminate or add more ideas.

I hope this helps everyone with their SEO.

Rue,

You do have to sign up for a Google Adwords account to research keywords. You do NOT have to actually run any Google Ads, you can simply stop at the end of your keyword research.

HI Mary ..
I see my reply post to your last comment to me was removed.

If I posted something that was unacceptable please let me know what it was so I won't do it again. As I've said I'm new to these groups and not sure just where and how to post.

Many thanks

Celia,

Someone else reported this last week. I have not been able to duplicate the problem.

Which browser are you using?

Do you see this row of drop down menu options next to the Google logo near the top of the browser: Home, Campaigns, Opportunities, Tools

Have you tried starting a Campaign? Does this get you to the point of looking up keywords?

Google Ad Campaigns can be frozen before any ads are run.

I'm using internet explorer. No row at the top. I haven't tried starting a campaign, it wants me to input how much I want to spend. It has automatically populated keywords, I don't have to input anything. I guess it's looking at my website.

Cecilia Ann,

I had that same problem when I first went to Google Adwords.

I didn't join , I didn't add any money amount, all I did was click on KEYWORDS and it had a search bar to enter a word you wanted to search . I did that and the word or phrase came up with the number of searches it was getting.

When I finished search for my idea words I just logged out of Google. When I went back later my word list was there and I continued searching other words.

Hope this helps....Also if you don't have Mary's ebook on how to do SEC's you should certainly get it...it wasn't expensive and it has information that will help. I would not have been able to understand this or do it without her book.

I clicked on the words but it just asks me to add a word, not like marys directions. it displays all the words that is found on my website so it does not help me at all because it is displaying search words that belong to other items in my shop.

Cecilia

Did you try adding a word into the search box under the list of words they have on there already ?
There was keywords already added into my box from my google blog but I was able to add new words I wanted to search to the list already there and delete the ones I didn't want.

I am so stumped by this. I did see that page when I first opened shop. I wish I remembered what I did. I have tried many different keywords to find that page, but without any success.

Try this:

Rue, the problem with searching that way is that all the words that come out on the search from that screen are getting pulled from my etsy account so no new relevant keywords will be displayed

that's the same page I go to , and I'm able to enter search words and get new results for things that are not in my shop right now. So I really don't know why yours won't do the same. If I come across anything that might be helpful I'll let you know.

Cecilia,

When I go to that link, I have to click on "tools" and then scroll down to "keyword planner." From there, I have to click "Search for new keyword and ad group ideas"

Hope this helps.

(And I do find that Google seems to pitch me around in different places. You might try a different browser?)

Hi Mary, I followed all the directions and I couldn't get any keywords the first 3 times I tried. Finally, the 4th time I got some keywords but they are laid out very caotically. It looks like a data printout. I'm not sure how helpful it was. Did I do something wrong? thanks, deb

Never add your shop URL or Web site when searching for keywords on Google Adwords Keyword Planner. Google will limit the keyword suggestions to whatever it finds in your Etsy shop if you add the URL. You will see a lot more variety of keyword suggestions if you leave out the URL.

Celia,

Can you take screen prints of what you are seeing when you try to run Google Adwords Keyword Planner? This could give us the answer that is hard for us to see right now.

If you can take screen prints, please send me a message with screen prints uploaded so that I can see what you are seeing.
