I recognize that many people don't know how to use the Google Adwords Keyword Planner So I decided to give a tutorial. Everyone wants good SEO and this is a good way to research keywords phrases not only for your titles, but also for your tags.

1. Make an Google account (it's free) or sign in f you already have one.
2. Go to the TOOL tab and drop down to KEYWORD PLANNER
3. Go to SEARCH FOR NEW KEYWORD AND GROUP IDEAS
4 Go down to the third box that says PRODUCT CATEGORY and put in your product or follow the subcategories.
5. Go to the first box YOUR PRODUCT OR SERVICE and enter in any ideas you have for your item. You must hit enter after each idea.
6. Go to TARGETING and click on Google if you want Google and Search Partners
7. OPTIONAL:Then go to the gray box that says KEYWORD OPTIONS and click on the pencil icon. Turn on the top option that says "Only show ideas closely related to my search terms".
USE THIS FLAG: 1) when you want to only see suggestions very close to the keywords you entered. Do not check this flag if you want to see a larger variety of keywords.
2) The Broad search count should only be used as a guideline to see which keywords are more popular than others. Google no longer shows the Exact search count that would tell use exactly how often each keyword phrase was used each month.

8. Then click on the blue box that says GET IDEAS.

You will then see 2 tabs. The first one AD GROUP IDEAS gives you keyword phrases and their average monthly searches and subcategories. The second one KEYWORD IDEAS show you all the ideas you entered and a general monthly search averages.

Don't worry about the Competition (low, medium, high) as it only pertains to businesses paying for Google ads.

Also up at the top of the page you will see your product or service ideas (all the ideas you entered for your item(s). To the right you can MODIFY SEARCH. When you click on that, it will bring you back to your original ideas so you can eliminate or add more ideas.

I hope this helps everyone with their SEO.

If you're really having trouble with Google Adwords, I've used a tool from SEOBook.com that gives you more or less the same information, just in a slightly different format. You have to sign up with an account with them, then go to "Tools" then "Keyword Tool." There are some paid options and lots of ads for their own products. You can use the tool without getting into any of that stuff.

It will give you a box to enter a keyword, and then it will give you related suggestions. The number you'll want to look at is the average number of daily Google searches. The tutorial I watched recommended making sure the search terms you target are at least 3-4 words long and show at least 10 per day in this column.

It can be good to start by looking at something very general, like "jewelry," which has 14,000+ daily searches, which is way too general and surely too popular with sellers to be helpful, but if you scroll down you may start to see some searches that you hadn't thought of that are more popular than you'd expect. (Though, yikes! Be warned, the list "jewelry" suggests some very popular searches pertaining to body parts I can't say I'd ever have thought to decorate [blush] )

As you use the tool, it may keep asking you to answer silly Captcha type questions over and over again to make sure you're a person, not a bot. It's a weird thing, but just go with it.

Again, Google Adwords does appear to be the gold standard and it's a great tool, but if it's driving you insane, give SEOBook.com a try.

I just signed up for google analytics and google adwords, and I spent all day trying to figure out what I'm doing. I will be back to read more of your instructions, but right now I feel like my head might explode. Rome wasn't built in a day!

I followed the instructions, but like some above, no "tools" tab shows up and I am taken to purchase my first campaign. Scrolling down, I was able to generate keywords, although I had put in my Etsy URL. By putting the cursor on each keyword, there was a little box that showed up saying "more like these" which generates more keyword suggestions and the statistics. Otherwise I cannot find any tools like described in Mary's instructions. Not as useful as I had hoped.

Team Members:

If you're having difficulties getting into Google Adwords Keyword Planner, then Mary, our captain, says the following;

This link: accounts.google.com/ServiceLogin?service=adwords is the link for our Google account information: accounts. google.com

This link takes everyone directly to Google Adwords: adwords.google.com. This is the URL I always use in every browser to get into my Google Adwords account. We should give everyone this direct link: adwords.google.com.

Let us know if you're still have difficulties, let us know.

Anita and Barbara, I actually had to create a campaign for $1.00 and after I created it I stopped it. At that time I was able to see the bar at the top with the tools tab. Google did charge me 1.00 for the 2 minutes I had the campaign running but it was worth it.

i am able to access and work in it with no problems. I enter though Explorer of Firefox
My question is: My search results - Keyword (by relevance) -Avg. monthly searches-Competition -

Search terms: Jewelry and bird

is "competition" the key factor is choosing which keywords to use? What I read in prior listings, "high" means we are competing with the big boys and low means there is lower competitions?

jewelry
1,830,000
High

bird
135,000
Low

Thank you

The competition is only for those who are paying to use Google Adwords. For Etsy, you can ignore it. The more important for you is the Keyword phrase. Jewlery is too broad of a keyword to use by itself. You will get lost in the sea of Jewelry makers. Narrowing the search is always better. If your keyword phrase is Jewelry Bird, for example, this is a much better keyword phrase because it narrows the search down and people searching for Jewe;ry and Birds will find your shop.

Hi Mary, It's been several weeks now that I've been trying to make changes in my shop according to your SEO book and working on Google Adwords

Here's the phrases I changed to for shop title taken from adwords:
Original Oil Painting, ( 14,800 ) Studio and Plein Air Art ( 6,600 )
I put these phrases in the body of the description along with :
Online Art Gallery, ( 6,900 ) Art for sale, ( 15,000) Paintings for Sale ( 18,100 ) and different phrases like ...Southwestern Landscape, Mountains and Trees, those kind of phrases to tell about the piece.

I also changed the section titles, and I've added links on every listing.
I've written more post on my Google Blog and add links to Etsy. I've gotten more connected to Google Plus and I've had 2 friends add my link to their website. I been more active within Etsy which brings lots of people but mostly other shops.

I continue to read on how to do Linking and have gone to all the sites recommended in SEO but I still don't really understand it enough to be able to do it. When I go to the websites and read it , it just seems like some foreign language. On some of the sites I see the ' add URL '. but I can't tell if it's a free site or something that will cost or be a link farm from so I haven't done any of that as yet since there's so many warnings of doing linking wrong. I still can't figure out how to check sites to see if there are 'nofollow tags'

I''m not sure if the phrases I've chosen from adword for the shop title and sections were good or not..

Should I try to get a shop review at this point ? I've done all I know to do at this point and I would love to know if I'm on the right track.

thanks so much
Rue

Rue,

Have you tried to help others with their titles? You need to help three people before getting a shop critique. If you have and then feel that you have done all that you can for your shop, then by all means ask for a shop critique.

Rue,

You have done a lot of work since you bought my SEO Guidebook on March 14. You can post a request for an SEO Review after you help other sellers with their titles and/or tags. You can find those forum threads on this team.

Sarah, I'm lazy so I just go the the search bar and put in google adwords instead of the RSS feed. It takes me to a search page that says Google Adwords--Online Advertising by Google. I click on that and it takes me to the homepage where I put in my user name and password.

Now if you never have created an account before, do the following:

Go to the search bar and type in google adwords. It will take you to a search page that says Google.com--Google Adwords. Click on that and you should come to a page that has a little blue rectangle box and in the box it says GET STARTED NOW. Click on that and you should come to a page that says CREATE A GOOGLE ACCOUNT. Follow those directions and it should lead you right into Adwords. Do this if you've never created an account before.

You should not have to put in your URL. Do you have a gmail (email) account? This is the account I use to get into Google Adwords.

Try this and see what happens. We're trying to work on this problem to resolve it.

Sarah Johnson,

I just read your post about Seo and Adwords. It sounds like you are at about the same level of understanding in all this as I am ....I know almost nothing about SEO and such...believe me when I tell you that.

Here's the thing that I've done that is pulling me up to some basic understanding and to a place where I can make changes in my shop.
I bought the SEO book that is written by Mary about a month ago and that book has been my saving grace...it explains everything about how all this works in a way you can figure it out . Mary's book is a very reasonable price with a discount to Etsy people and it's available as a download on her Etsy shop.
If you want to make some progress in SEO you need to read this. I was in complete SHOCK after reading it ...I knew even less than I thought.

I've wasted so much time because I didn't understand how SEO works. Now, I'm starting to make progress.

Hope this helps :)
Rue

Thank you Mary, I do have a gmail account so I will try that, I guess I was in the wrong place. I got to the site okay by following your directions at the start of the thread but once I was there I wasn't doing it right.
Thank you Rue as well for the encouragement and sounds like getting the book would be a good place for me to start too:)
Glad you are making progress Rue!

If you don't have the tool bar downloaded then you can get there by just doing a search on google for Google Adwords. That 's how I got there and I have all kinds of google accounts but didn't download the tool bar

Opps I see this is and old post ....lol

Re: How to use Google Adwords Keyword Planner

Sarah,

I realize that Google's Keyword Planner is the gold standard, but I happen to find the Keyword tool at SEOBook.com a lot easier to use. You have to join and sign in, but I haven't found that they spam me or anything.

The principle is the same, search for somewhat general keyword phrases, like "scrapbook" or that fit your item and drill down to longer keywords (The guideline I've heard on SEO book is to stick to searches that happen at least 10x a day).

I also like to keep a list of potential long-tailed keywords that I may not have the right listing for just yet, but could easily develop.

Don't worry, after a while SEO will become second nature, and you won't be feeling like you need to redo listings once you have the hang of it. (Of course, you'll always tweak here and there.)
