preparing for a possible Canada Post disruption - news thread

Jump to solution
As you know, there is again a possibility of a labour dispute at Canada Post this fall, since they never resolved anything last time.
https://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2018/07/12/canada-post-hellbent-on-labour-dispute-as-talks-conti...

Since it has been two years since I last updated the Canada shipping alternatives thread:
https://www.etsy.com/teams/7654/etsy-international/discuss/17821085/page/6?post_id=355555017

if people know of new options, please post them here. I know ChitChats has expanded (and is going to be opening in Calgary soon) but there may be other options I don't know about yet. I'd like to have everything in one place as a reference, should the situation get bad.

Canada Post has now stated that they are " ... advising commercial customers and Canadians that mail and parcels in or entering its network will have long and unpredictable delays before being delivered.
... [we expect] the worst delays for mail and parcels will be for items that originate or are destined for southern and southwestern Ontario. This is because the country's largest and busiest mail and parcels processing plants, in Toronto, have the highest volumes and have been left idle repeatedly for several days by the union's rotating strikes. As central hubs for the entire country, they see a disproportionately large flow of items.
... As early as the end of the week, Canada Post may be unable to honour pickups and induct items in the GTA due to lack of trailers and space."

https://www.canadapost.ca/web/en/comm/details.page?article=2018/11/19/last_ditch_efforts_t&cattype=s...

It is that last bit that is most likely to spur the government to act - incoming mail being completely shut down in the busiest areas - but of course none of us can say for sure what will happen next.

Currently on strike:

Chatham (ON)
Kelowna (BC)
Kitchener-Waterloo
Scarborough (ON): Markham Delivery Centre (31 Brodie), Richmond Hill Main and West Beaver Creek facilities
St. Thomas (ON)
Woodstock (ON)

There are still pickets around the country, consisting of people who are not employees or CUPW union members, some blocking facilities for a period of time in some areas

First date that disruptions could start is Sept 26:
https://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/canada-post-strike-or-lockout-possible-later-this-month-1.4086229
although we don't know if the workers have actually voted to strike yet, as the strike vote ended yesterday.

In my other life, we started using https://www.eshipper.com/ during the last Canada Post lockout. We liked it so much, we kept using it for over half our shipping.

Basically, we plug the numbers in, and they give a list of companies that will ship the parcels. We schedule the pickup and the currior comes right to the door and takes the parcels away. Super-easy.

I've been chatting with eshipper and they ship internationally and sound good for small businesses like mine that don't ship large parcels or every day.

Over 90% of members voted to authorize a strike:
https://www.cupw.ca/en/postal-workers-overwhelmingly-vote-support-good-jobs-and-better-services-all

Those of you who have been down this road before know that this doesn't mean there will be a strike, or at least a full strike, or even a lockout, on September 26th, although that is the first day something could happen.

there will no doubt be more news in the next few days.

They have even started locking street mailboxes. I usually drop off my packages and the 2 I use the most were locked. I couldn't open them. Thankfully we have a pick-up scheduled at work today, I will give him my packages then.

hmm, can anyone else confirm that in their neighbourhood? It could be unrelated, although it is something I have seen very rarely.

That hasn't happened here. It's way too early to do that, anyway. One should have access until at least the day before a possible disruption.

Here is the latest from Canada Post:
https://www.canadapost.ca/web/en/comm/details.page?article=2018/09/20/update_on_negotiatio&cattype=s...

TL;DR:
- negotiations continue
- job actions by either side require 72 hours notice, so the earliest either side could announce a job action/lockout is Sunday Sept. 23
- Canada Post "would continue to operate" in other locations if the union does rotating strikes.

(remember that in the past, CP locked the union out after 1-2 weeks of rotating strikes, but they seem to be committing to not doing that this time, at least not right away)

Thanks, Cindy and Celine

I see that CP gave the rural carriers a hefty raise, so hopefully that will quell the hordes for the time being. :D

Whatever the problem was they fixed it. Contacted them on Facebook and a unit went to look.

when will shipping labels be stopped from etsy? I live in a rural community and it is not practical to use another way to ship. When should i stop accepting orders? I am headed down to post office now and will be having a chat with them on their suggestings. Should i just go into vacation mode?

I assume Etsy will sell labels as long as mail is going out. I would be surprised if they stopped while mail is still being delivered.

i spoke to the girls and they said that they are still in negotiations, that they are ready to strike but does not mean that they will actually strike, i guess it is a just wait and see thing.

From the postal workers union website:

https://www.cupw.ca/en/no-72-hour-notice%E2%80%A6-now

Monday September 24 2018
2015-2019/417
No. 37

The CUPW National Executive Board (NEB) has decided not to file a 72-hour strike notice for now. The NEB has decided to give Canada Post an opportunity to finally address our demands. We are still determined to achieve the collective agreements that you deserve.

Be Prepared

In negotiations, things can change quickly, so you all must be prepared for the possibility that the NEB may have to issue a 72-hour strike notice if negotiations do not progress.

What Next?

Currently, the ball is in Canada Post’s court. We presented them with global offers on September 14 and it is up to them to respond. Time will tell if Canada Post will take our demands seriously, but we must all be ready for whatever happens.

Usually Canada post does wildcat strikes, a city here and a city there, they do not shut down the whole industry, my husband worked in the paper industry for years, this was there strategy too as not to be ordered back to work by the government, let’s hope it goes this way and the majority of mail continues to flow.

wildcat strikes are not approved by the union; I think you are referring to rotating strikes, which this union has done before.

Cindy I stand corrected, I meant rotating strikes, wildcat strikes are a thing of the past. Loss of money and hearty fines didn’t fly. I am happy that they have continued to negotiate.

Just heard on the news that the union has delivered the notice to Canada Post. Potential rotating strike date is next Monday.
