Thoughts? Gift Cards You Buy Can't Be Redeemed on Your Own Account

So I was reading this thread:

You can't buy a gift card and redeem it on your own account. Seems pretty restrictive.

What if I buy a GC for someone and decide to go a different direction for a gift for the person I orignally bought the GC for? I could see myself doing that. I would have thought...well I'll just use the GC for myself.

I could see someone having a little extra money one month, but not knowing what they want yet and buying a GC to load on their account so they don't spend the $$ somewhere else without realizing it.

Now, I have multiple accounts...so in theory I can get around all of that if Etsy doesn't have a specific rule against it.

It seems like it could cause problems (already has for one buyer)...maybe the above scenarios wouldn't happen as much as I think?

Just wondering what others think about this. I didn't see this restriction mentioned on the GC buy page and I think it is a pretty big restriction.

Hi,

As a venue that processes credit card transactions on behalf of buyers and sellers, there is increased risk for the illegal movement of money (think stolen credit cards). Since gift cards have a real dollar value, we don't allow you to purchase a gift card for yourself. We prefer not to speak about risk issues in the public forums, and hope you understand, but if you need further clarification feel free to Convo me.

Thanks for the reply.

I was assuming there was a reason for it, most times companies try not to make too many issues for themselves where they aren't needed.

I suppose an idea for GC would be to note at purchase it can't be loaded to one's own account. Although as I mentioned...I'm not too sure if there are a lot of people that would think about Etsy GC's how I mentioned above.

As I understand it, you cannot purchase a gift card for yourself but your husband could purchase one for you.

I can hardly wait for someone to pay with one. I have no idea. I guess I'll read up on it when I have to. Which reminds me. My shop says I accept them. I don't remember signing up for that gig, but I'd rather than not, and have someone click me away!
