How do you charge/collect NY State taxes with Direct Checkout?

I got my first sale today in NY State where I need to charge sales tax but have no idea how to do it through direct checkout. The person already checked out so I guess I would need to refund and send a new invoice. How do people do that? I've heard with paypal you ask the customer to select "other" when checking out and then send a full invoice for the amount including tax. Is there that option with Direct Checkout? If not what do you do?

Please help I need to respond ASAP! Thank you!!!!

You might want to try there. I've seen this topic discussed there by experienced sellers from NY.

I know you can't invoice from DC.

Good luck with it.

You need to go to your settings and set up sales tax. It will automatically only charge for NY if you set it up that way.

If you have it set up through PayPal, you need to disable that.

There is a NYS tax team, you should check it out

You should definitely check out that NY Tax team, there are a lot of experienced sellers on there.

The problem with Etsy and NY is that the sales tax in NY is based on the destination of the package, but that the zip codes in NY don't always match with the county lines. To process it correctly, you need to find out the tax jurisdiction of the destination (not the zip code) to ensure you're charging the right amount on your invoice to them.

But check out the team, there are people much more well-versed than I am and they can definitely help answer your questions about how to do this properly.

Or... if Etsy would just give us an option to set up by jurisdiction as opposed to zipcode like we've requested, we could resolve it. Good luck!!
