Direct Checkout Refund Through PayPal?

Sorry if this is a repeat question but I am exhausted searching all over Etsy for an answer:

If a customer paid with a credit card through "Direct Checkout" and returned the item and wants a refund, is it possible to give them their refund through PayPal? They have requested the refund be given through PayPal. If done that way, how can Etsy know that a refund was actually given and thus refund me the Etsy fees connected with the sale?To clarify, I know it's possible to give them their money back via PayPal using their e-mail address (which they gave me) but my real question is if that refund were given through PayPal, would I get my sales fees back from Etsy?

Most sellers even brick and mortar only refund in the manner in which the original transaction was processed. If the buyer wants a refund, I would only refund through DC.

OK, I wrote to Etsy support and got the following response:

<<"You will not be able to refund a buyers Paypal account if Direct Checkout was used to make the payment. Direct Checkout payments will be refunded to the same card the purchase was made to">>
