Clarification needed please on new shipping system

Hi:
I am trying to set up new shipping profiles. I run a bath an beauty shop. The profile asks for the dimensions and weight of our listing- What does this mean EXACTLY -? Do I put the dimensions and weight of the my product ? Do i put it of the box I use? I have seen posts that contradict each other- Some are saying its just the box and others just the item??? My problem is most of my orders are not single items they are several items in one order that I fit into the boxes here ( not flat rate) How does it calculate an order with several items in it?? Sorry to be a pain with all the questions but a lot of the people I am talking to aren't in agreement about what we are supposed to do so PLEASE HELP!

Mignon, hello and you've come to the right place for the proper answers. Unfortunately people who don't even use calculated shipping feel the need to answer questions about it and they are usually wrong.

In the listing you put the dimensions of your item - if you wrap it in bubble wrap then you measure it that way, with the packing material - but you do NOT use the box size.

The reason you put in the item dimensions if for the very reason you are asking about - multiple items - the calculator takes the dimensions of the ITEMs and fits them into boxes - multiple items into one box.

I sell candles. I sell multiples all the time. Sometimes it is a few of the same items and sometimes it is a mix of many of my items. The calculator fits my items into the boxes I've selected to use and gives me the proper shipping to the zip code it is going. I could not be happier with the results I'm getting from CS. It works great for multiple item sales.

Package Preferences - this is where you want to enter the box dimensions that you use. Uncheck the use etsy common size boxes and put your own box sizes there. Then the calculator will fit your items into the boxes you want to use.

We did it again Kathy!.....typing at the same time!
Mignon, on a shipping profile you do not enter the weight and item size.

Now if you use only certain box sizes you need "disable" etsy's common box sizes and enter you own box sizes under package preferences section.
That way CS will only use the boxes in your list.

You have to use the new listing manager too.

You don't need but a few shipping profiles.
You can name them whatever you like, this is only for you.

If you only ship Priority, that is all you need. You could name it Priority items.
If you ship first class and Priority you need both of these on one profile.
If you use Parcel Select and Priority, you can do a profile for this.

As for weight and size, this only goes in your listing for each item.

Weight is TOTAL weight, item + any packing + Box, all packed and ready to ship.

Dimensions: Item + any packing like bubblewrap.

Also if your items are folded up to mail you need to measure them folded like you'd put in a box.

Example, if I had a yard of fabric, I would not put 36x44x1 for the item dimensions, I'd put what the fabric is folded up to mail, around 5x6x1.

If you can get several items in a box, you will need to figure out what measurements to put to get CS to put multiples in one box.

Example: if you use a 12x12x8 box and you put the item size a 11x11x7, CS is only going to put 1 of these in that box. If you can get 2 items in this size box you need to put 12x12x4 so 2 will fit.

Sometimes we have to tweak our dimensions to get multiple in a box.

Re: Clarification needed please on new shipping system

A note about weight. The rule is to put the weight of your single item all boxed up and ready to ship. This is because you want to get enough shipping in case only one item is ordered. However, you may need to work at this a bit. If you sell a lot of multiples, it's better to pack up two items and maybe adjust your weight down a bit for one.

Example - My jar candles weight 1.12 pounds all boxed up and ready to ship for one. But 2 of them in a box ready to ship only weigh 2.15 pounds. There is a big difference between shipping a box at 3 pounds and one that is just a tad over 3 pounds. Since I know I can ship 2 under the 3 pound limit - I make the weight for my jars 1.8 pounds. I get enough to ship just one, but then the shipping price for 2 is also correct.

Mignon, I looked at your shop. It would be very easy to set it up for CS. It looks like you only have 3 or 4 different items basically. Once you figure the dimensions and weight for one jar - you just fill in that information for each jar. The same with your tubes and with your sprays.

The calculator will take care of packing your boxes for you if you follow all the tips from Pat and I above.
