Calculated shipping on Multiple items in one order

First off...I L.O.V.E. the new shipping calculator!!!!!! It has saved me over $100.00 already this month. I was getting raped on shipping overages. But my question is....I had a customer order 6 items and each one was calculated individually, and it charged her A LOT (of which I refunded the overage) I use a 23x23x3 custom made box, usps priority shipping...and I can fit two items in this box. Is there a way to add 'if shipped with another item' so that the buyer doesn't get charged so much on a multiple order? Any help is much appreciated!!! Thanks! :)

No there is not "with another item". What you need to adjust is the dimensions of your item so that two will fit in your box.

Are you putting the box size for the item instead of the actual item dimensions?

How calculate a second item? For example
If a sell a purse the shipping cost 9.00 with another item what should add if the cost is two dollars more should a put in the box with another item 2.00 dollars or 11.00?

If you are using CS you do not have the option to add cost for each additional item nor the option to put in any shipping cost. This is only for the old way of doing shipping cost.

With CS, the shipping is figured on the weight of ALL items purchased.
You do not enter a shipping cost, ONLY the weight of the item + packing + box and the item dimension (including bubblewrap if needed) when you list an item.

Do not enter the box size and make sure you enter the total weight of the item boxed and ready to mail.

You can only use "with another item cost" or put shipping cost down for listings without CS, done the old way.

No need with CS to figure out what additional items cost to mail.

CS does it for you.

You might have to tweak your weights some.

Example I sell goat coats, a few sizes I sell weigh with a box 1 lb. 10 oz.

If 2 are bought it calculates at 3 lb. 4 oz.

But I can get 2 of them in a slightly bigger box for 2 lb. 12 oz.

So what I do is put the weight 1 lb. 6 or 7 oz so it will calculate at the 3 lb rate instead of a 4 lb. rate.

You have to set up shipping profiles BEFORE you can use CS.

Be sure NOT to add all mail classes to one profile or someone could select media mail and the item won't be media mail.

I'm getting that "Uh Oh, something went wrong response." Not sure what's missing. Today I set up a shipping profile that calculates the shipping on one particular item that I just sold and was needed ASAP. No problem. Now I'm trying to apply that same profile to all my listings and I get the error response above.

Hi there, I just opened my shop and I am having a hard time to get the calculated shipping for multiple items set up. I saw that other shop owners set it up but it seems that in my store it multiples the shipping cost according to the quantity added to the shipping cart. Any help is much appreciated! Thank you!

If you don't have boxes and/or mailers to fit multiples in then the calculator will figure separate shipping cost.

I list all the free Priority boxes, the Tyvek envelope, 4 generic mailers I use plus an assorted of box sizes for the calculator to pick from.

These go under the Package preference section under shipping profiles.


I just make sure I don't put a box size that is considered oversize by USPS.
Easy way to remember any box over 12x12x12 (36" total) is oversize.

A 13x12x12 is oversize since those 2 measurements total 37".
But a 14x12x10 or a 16x10x10 is not oversize since these measurements total 36".

Just because the calculator might pick one of these boxes does not mean I have to use it. I keep a lot of boxes so I can usually find one close the size I need.

If you use mailers, it's best to put more than 1" height depending on what you can get in them and your item size.

I also disable Etsy's common box sizes since I want the calculator to pick only from my boxes/mailers.

If you fold/roll the item to mail you'd use that measurement.
If you double box an item you'd use that smaller box measurement.

Weight is total weight of everything, packed up ready to mail.

Thank you Pat for responding so quickly. I guess as a beginner it's really hard to understand all that. I looked again at my shipping profile and added several packages preferences from the ones I could chose from. I wanted to add a small padded envelope but it still gives me the three dimensions and it has only two. I just added 1inch. Need to change that to 2". I used I will check on everything you said.

On the package preference section you can add as many boxes/mailers you want. Just choose custom size and type in the size of your box or mailer. I use all the free Priority boxes and I just name them by the # like #7 Priority box.

For my mailers or generic boxes I just put small, medium or large mailer or small, medium or large generic box.

The ones you choose from in that section are the flat and regional rate options.

I prefer not to use either the regional or flat rate boxes in my shops since I sell such a wide variety of items and I don't want the calculator to put a breakable item in a padded flat rate envelope. But if you sell similar sized items these would work well.

As for mailers of any type, you have to add a height.

If you only put 1" for the height, the calculator will only put items with a 1" height in them.

If you have someone buy several items and your item size is for example 8x6x1 and your mailer size is 12x9x1, the calculator will only fit ONE of these item in the mailer.

If you can get 2 of these items in that 12x9 mailer you need to put 2" for the mailer height, or 3" for the mailer height if you can get 3 in it.

But if you have an item that is smaller for example 4x3x1 the calculator can fit several of these in that 12x9x1 mailer because of the item size.

The calculator uses a 3-D program to stack, put side by side, or end to end to fit items in our boxes/mailers.

Just because the calculator recommends a certain box/mailer size does not mean you have to use it. As long as your weight is right you can use whatever works best (and as long as the box isn't oversize).

I sold a salt/pepper set in my other shop and the calculator recommended putting in a 8x8x8 box but my 14x8x7 box was better so I used it instead.

Silba, Just took a peek at your shop.
On the lip balms, once I put 5 of these in my cart, shipping is $10.77, no longer the first class option.

This is a 1 lb. 1 oz to 2 lb rate.

How much do you have for the weight of each lip balm?

I wouldn't think 5 of these would weigh over 1 lb.

I think this topic might be older, but I'm just now trying to figure this out. I'm confused by this statement:

I'm putting the ACTUAL weight of each soap in each listing. Then with the dimensions, I wrapped each soap in bubble wrap, as I would mail it in the package and used that as the dimension. I don't understand the above statement, "weight is packed up ready to mail".

Terry - that simply means that if you sell only 1 soap, you will need to know (and have this in the listing) what the weight is for shipping 1 soap. That needs to include the weight of the box or mailer you use to mail the soap in.

Where the dimension only needs to be the item itself (wrapped in bubble wrap as you do it) because the calculator can fit multiple items into one mailer or box - the weight needs to be the actual shipping weight for 1 item so that you get enough shipping cost from your buyer.

The calculator only goes by the weight you enter in the listing when determining shipping cost. The calculator does not add any weight for mailers or boxes.

For instance - if 1 soap by itself weighs 3 ounces, I'm sure once you wrap it up and put it in a mailer and add whatever else you do to mail (business card or receipt for instance) - the whole package might weigh 6 ounces. If you only put the soap weight of 3 ounces in the listing, you are not going to get enough shipping when the customer buys just 1 because when you go to print the label you will need to enter 6 ounces and that is going to be more postage than 3 ounces.

Now sometimes with smaller items you can adjust that weight. For instance, you can see what 2 or 3 items weigh when packaged and ready to ship and then divide by 2 or 3 if you often sell multiples.

For instance, if 3 soaps only weigh 15 ounces when packaged and ready to ship - even though 1 may weigh 6 ounces, you could put 5 ounces in your listing. That way 3 soaps wouldn't go over a pound so they could still ship first class. And 5 ounces or 6 ounces both cost the same amount in postage anyway. Sometimes adjustment is needed.

Pat, sorry for not responding earlier. Thanks for taking a peak at my shop. I really do appreciate. I am still having a hard time. I just checked it and 3 Lip Balm weigh 3/4oz and I have in my listing 4oz. Should I weigh it with a wrap around it or just the Lip Balms? Thanks again.

On the lip balms if you have 4 oz for each item weight and 5 are bought, the buyer is only going to see Priority since 5 x 4 oz = 20 oz.

Weight is supposed to be item + any packing + mailer but on light weight items I do have to tweak them somewhat to get multiples to work.

What does 1 lip balm and packaging weigh?
If 3 weight 3/4 oz. you could probably get by by putting 2 oz or even 1.5 oz for each item.

If you put 2 oz for each lip balm weight, then a buyer would have to buy 9 (18 oz) in order for shipping to only show Priority.

I have 2 shops and in my other shop I sell dog belly bands, very lightweight.

Some smaller sizes with a mailer will weigh approx. 2 oz.
But when multiples are bought 2 oz is too much weight to put.

So instead of putting 2 oz. I'll put 1.25 oz, 1.5 oz. 1.75 oz, depending on what size and what the weight needs to be for multiples to work.

One size, 2 bands will weigh with a mailer 3 oz. So for these I'll put 1.5 oz, still calculates on a 2 oz rate for 1 item.

But when 2 are bought it calculates at 3 oz, 3 will calculate at 4.5 oz which is what is needed.

It's not as critical now since all FC rates are the same from 1-3 oz and from 4-8 oz. but I still use this method because I get a lot of multiple orders and want shipping to work out even if 5-10 are bought.

I sell 13"x19" prints of my artwork and use USPS Priority Mail triangular free tubes for shipping. I have a shipping profile for the U.S. of $8.00 for one item plus $1.00 for each additional item in the same tube. How do I adjust my retail shipping price for multiples items in the same tube?

Having a similar issue with multiple items and calculated shipping. I cannot for the life of me figure out why customers are still getting charged too much for two items that should fit in one mailer. I believe I have the right measurements/weights filled in, being that I have the entire packaged item weight and all packaging EXCEPT the mailer in the dimensions. Is that correct? I sell small hair bows, each weighing less than an ounce, even packaged. Same goes for 2 packaged bows. In the packaging, without the mailer they are in a 5.75x4 clear bag. I can fit 2 bows in that one clear bag and then that goes in a 7x5 small bubble mailer. I've tried messing around with the measurements and making the packaging a bit smaller and the mailer a bit bigger but it still wants to charge extra for 2 bows. Can anyone help me figure out what I'm putting in wrong? I keep reading these forum answers but it's still like Chinese to me! Thank you!

Avery, customers are getting charged double shipping because you don't have a package for the calculator to fit 2 or more items in.

You mention the 2 of the bows are 5.75x 4 and your mailer is 7x5
What is the height for the item and the mailer?

If you have 5.75x4x1 for the 2 bows, the calculator can NOT fit 2 of these in your 7x5 mailer especially if you have the mailer height at 1".

You'd need to make the item size smaller or the mailer size bigger for this to fit.

You need to put the dimension of ONE bow in your listing if you are selling one bow unless you're selling in sets of 2, then you'd put the dimensions of 2 bows.

One item I sell is dog belly bands.
I put the item size 4x3x1 and 2 of these will fit in my smallest mailer size of 10x7x1. 2 of these will lay side by side and fit in my mailer size.
If I'd want 4 to fit in that mailer I'd have to put a 2" height on it.

But since 2 is what I want to fit in that smaller mailer I leave the mailer height at 1".

My next mailer size is 12x9x2.
Quite a few of the 4x3x1 bands will fit in it.

If enough of the bands are bought not to fit in it, I have another mailer size a 15x12x4 and A LOT of bands will fit in it.

Do you list mailers in the package preference section?
You probably need to list more than 1 size.

I prefer to list boxes/mailers I use in this section and I disable etsy's box sizes but you can use both.

This cost is for a package fee if you want to add one if you don't you don't have to.

Sellers use it if they have to buy a box or want to add extra insurance or for shipping supplies.

If you add a fee that fee is "only" applied when that box size is selected by the calculator for your order.
It is applied per order in addition to shipping.

I also wanted to mention if you have a handling fee on a shipping profile that fee is added PER item.

If you have a fee in both places, both can be added to an order on top of the shipping costs.

Hoping someone might be able to answer this - Does Etsy calculated shipping accommodate first class letter rates at all, or does it always assume package rates apply? For example, my shop contains a lot of greeting cards (sent stamped individually at letter rate for orders of three cards or less, I step up to package rates for 4 cards or more). Trying to get my head around how I might be able to jigger the calculated shipping to work for this scenario. Base package rates start at roughly $2.10. If someone orders one card it doesn't make sense for me to charge them that for a $3 card, especially when it arrives stamped to a value of roughly 70 cents.

I'm having trouble with setting up multiple weights for 1 item in my shop. I sell herbs and my weights for 1 product are as follows:
1oz; 2oz and 4oz. I cannot find where to put the weights for each specific variation. Etsy is only allowing me to put one weight and one dimension for 1 item when I have 3 available for one product. If a customer orders 1oz of each herb in my shop it will charge them the weight of the 4oz and so forth. Is there a way to correct this in the Etsy Platform other than having to list each item separately which will clutter my herbal shop?

Unfortunately you can only put one weight/size per listing. I have multiple listings for each item because I sell in different quantities. It does clutter my shop.
