Facebook Etiquette

I want to get opinions on how to be on Facebook. If a person has a page for their shop is it appropriate for people to post their links on your page without asking first. I just want to get everyone's take as there seems to mixed thoughts among other "like" pages.

Re: Facebook Etiquette

it happens, but it is kinda tacky in my opinion. it's one thing to share links and trade 'likes' and stuff on these message boards- that's awesome- but putting their links on your page could be considered spammy i think.

Re: Facebook Etiquette

Facebook is a public platform. So, while it may be tacky, people are "allowed" to. If you do not want people to to post links on your page (since the intention may be to advertise), change your account settings so that people will not be able to it. The "Link" won't show up anymore for visitors. Hope this helps. Good Luck!

Re: Facebook Etiquette

I agree - While I don't mind featuring people on my page, it does get out of hand when everyone is posting their site on your page. I should probably set my account settings differently, but I would still like for people to be able to comment. It wouldn't be bad if it was only a couple people posting links on your facebook page, but if yours is like mine, it gets over run very quickly with everyone else's pages!

Re: Facebook Etiquette

It really is tacky, I agree! I am not in business to advertise for others, although I do feature artists by my choosing, it really got out of hand when I joined this team, and I am guilty of it as well, but have realized it is innapropriate after all the links I get on my page, especially the ones who are my competition! That erks me!

Re: Facebook Etiquette

If you change you account settings to NOT include the "Link" option, I believe people are still able to comment or "Post."

I linked my page my page in the beginning, when everyone was networking, but it was not with the intention to advertise on other's pages. It was to give an easier direction to my page to "Like" back, since we had to "Like" with our personal accounts. Without it people don't know that your have a page. Now, however, I am tagging myself in the posts after I "Like" people.

Re: Facebook Etiquette

Yes! Agree - LilyBean... I love featuring others when it is someone I know that I want to promote - but having to feature even the people that are selling similar items to me does not sit well. I need to go through and clean up my page a little :)

I still want people to be able to comment, and I love how LilyBean left a picture of her painting on my page after she received it. So I don't want to set limits on people posting - maybe I will just have to delete unwanted links as they show up?

Re: Facebook Etiquette

Someone posted a link to my page.. I just wasn't expecting it, I guess! I haven't done much with my Facebook page, yet. Only 5 likes!

I'd rather people approached me and asked me to share their link. That way I can do it in my own style. I'm big on everything flowing and fitting in with my stuff and my personality so I'd rather go into someone's store, pick my favourite item and write why I like it than just have the link posted to my page.

It's not that I'm against promoting others, I'd just like to be in control.

Plus I would never post my link on someone else's page unless I was invited.

Re: Facebook Etiquette

That is a good point about being invited to post a link. Then I don't see anything wrong if you want your page taken up with other peoples businesses :) I like to promote people I have a connection with, or that share a similar love of my style, (shabby chic and vintage) because that is what a lot of my fans like too. I have promoted someone in the vintage hair accessories business, she and I are in the same photography giveaway and we share the same love of vintage and fine fabrics, she has her customer base and I have mine, she has even introduced me to her photographer and I introduced her to mine. There is love to share on fb and it's hard to know how each business feels about links, but here on out we need to spread the word to fellow newbies on the least tacky way to get "liked" !

Re: Facebook Etiquette

A reason ppl are posting on your page (at least why I have been) is because on another discussion someone sugested we write what we sell along with a link on each others pages & so thats what we have been doing. Sorry if I offended anyone.

Re: Facebook Etiquette

Thanks all for your responses. I wasn't sure how to react. I do want to feature other artists but I would also like them to ask since it may or may not be something I would like to share with those that like me.

Re: Facebook Etiquette

ScrappinArt, you're absolutely right. When the discussions first started about facebook it was suggested that we should enter our links, as someone else posted as well.

You shouldn't feel badly about it.
