Turquoise cabs

I'm wondering if any of you know a good source for quality authentic turquoise cabs. Turquoise is abundant here in the southwest but much of it is fake. I'm looking for genuine turquoise for a commissioned piece I'm working on. Many thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Re: Turquoise cabs

Do you ever get to New Mexico? There's a place in Cerrillos, on the Turquoise Trail (State Hwy 14) between Santa Fe and Albuquerque. The signs are for a trading post, mining museum, and petting zoo. The guy who runs it mines the turquoise himself, I'm sure he could set you up. He owns several mines, the turquoise from each is quite different.

I seriously doubt he does mail order, so this info is probably only useful if you ever happen to be in the area.

Re: Turquoise cabs

Thanks for the info Matthew, I appreciate it. If I find myself in New Mexico, I'll definitely check out the shop in Cerrillos.

Unfortunately, I'll need some turquoise sooner rather than later for the piece I'm currently working on.

Re: Turquoise cabs

If you want mail order turquoise, your best bet is Thunderbird Jewelry Supply in Gallup, NM. Ask to speak to their stone department, and you want someone who has been there for awhile. Tell them what you need: natural, with or without matrix, baroque or not, matching or not, smooth top or semi or natural top, the basic color. They'll come back with quotes of what is currently available, named by the mine, and the prices by gram or carat. Just remember that you get what you pay for, so be prepared to pay at least several dollars per carat. The carat price does include any backing material. Good luck!

Re: Turquoise cabs

I should also mention this turquoise is only available in small lots and limited supply, and is not advertised in their catalog.

Re: Turquoise cabs

Talk to these people - he's the gemstone guy who's always in Art Jewelry magazine, and their stuff should be the real deal.

Re: Turquoise cabs

Yep, that's the place! After meeting Todd and seeing the place in January, I kind of assumed they had no web presence so I didn't even look. :P

Todd is an absolute character.

Re: Turquoise cabs

Thanks for the link Nance!

Matthew, I really like Todd's turquoise - the color is different than what you typically find.

Re: Turquoise cabs

The web site only mentions the one mine. He's got several, and the color from each is different.
