In a small town all the kids were given passes for the circus and parents felt "required" to go and support the Shriners. We went once and after the freak out that is the last time we ever attended. I don't like them either. I don't even like zoos.
Oh, I've been "going along with it" since his birth, an aversion to stickers and stamps isn't going to ruin his life or anything. His teacher was way more concerned about I then I've ever been....apparently they can't grade papers without stamps and stickers, lame.
A simple "good job!" handwritten in pen wouldn't suffice I suppose Jen?
silly stuff. But you are right its not going to ruin his life and its surely not a sign of something "deeper", he will eventually just move past it and realize that while annoying somethings just have to happen. He may feel less of an aversion to getting his hand stamped when it means he can buy a drink at a concert!
Aw, Jen, I can relate to having a child that just doesn't make things 'easy'. Mines always had an aversion to being taught anything, from academics to a sport or skill. At least yours will most likely never cover himself in tattoos.
Spent a lot of my life 'going along with it' under quiet protest. But I have limits.
The school sticker thing is just a sign that people in jobs have an easier time not thinking, much easier to have slots for people and processes.... 'I'll just jam this one square peg into the round holes'.
Haven't had my hand stamped for a long time, and I'd still cringe even if it were absolutely necessary.
morning all. i laughed so hard at the lady with the pepper that i spilled coffee on myself. last time i went to the circus was with the local PETA group to picket it. wendy would be soo proud :) so we had dinner with the art dealers last night. actually only one and her BF. she is the dtr of the owner of the company. delightful young folks. i am going to get them at the hotel soon and they will spend the day with me. might not be around much. good luck on big ass sales guys! my ring lady hasn't bought but i see she was in the shop again last night favoriting things so maybe i'm still on her radar screen.
Wow, lots of potential dust floating around the thread. That's awesome!
Busy here. Trying to catch-up from vacation is rough, lol.
The weather here has been gorgeous! It was 75 degrees last night. We took the pups out for a walk! Met some new neighbors and had a great time. Didn't finish anything last night and I have a meeting this evening. Hopefully, I can get a few photos taken of the new work.
Off to town to beat the heat. Can't beat the smoke though, it's being held in over a large part of central BC, an area about 3 times the area of Ohio, I looked it up....
Held in by the dome of high pressure, may be shifted by Friday, but for now it's like Beijing on a really bad day. No deep breathing.
The Holly Shelter Gameland had a fire last year, and we could smell it for the same reason. It let up in the evenings - something about heat inversion at the end of the day. But during the day, it was awful.
Jen, we have been through LOTS and lots of testing for #1 and the aversion to stuff on his hands could be sensory processing disorder. Or it could be that he doesn't like the way it feels. I'd say, from experience, that if the teacher is concerned you might want to get him evaluated so you can develop a specific plan for the school so they can work with him in an appropriate way. IMHO, teachers usually err on the side of caution. We could not get anyone to tell us what they thought until #1 was literally licking a toilet at school. On a dare. Yes he did. Only then did they hesitantly say we should take him in for testing. I begged them from age 3-8. Begged. And nobody wanted to misdiagnose and cause a problem, which I get. We still don't ahve all the answers about #1. We go for further testing in Iowa City at Children's hospital in August.
That said, my #2 LOVES to have her hands messy with anything gooey or yucky. My complicated #1 will not touch anything messy but just because he doesn't like it. It doesn't cause a problem but he will choose to avoid if he can.
Big J will not - NOT - take off his socks. Ever. Something about his bare feet on the floor icks him out. He's a bit obsessive about things, but the teachers don't seem to think there's anything "testable" about him. This same child went through a huge, drawn out phase at about two where he had to have two pens with him at all times. He would swish them in front of his face like windshield wipers. All. The. Time.
Kids are odd. I just go with it. But Ann's right - it may be nothing or it may be something.
Is it me or are there more things 'wrong' with children today versus 20 years ago? More allergies, more disorders, etc.? When I was in school there wasn't a single person with a peanut allergy. Now it seems really common.
Peanut allergies are all over the place. Autism - I had no idea what that was twenty years ago. Same for ADHD. I don't know if it's a lot of misdiagnosis or if there's a breakdown in our DNA occurring.
I was listening to a scientist speak about it recently. He has a theory that he says has a lot of evidence to support it that things like increases in asthma, allergies, celiac, food allergies, gluten intolerance, etc.. and other disorders even stuff like ADHD and such, like that can be tied to the destruction of microbes that live in our bodies. We are apparently forever changing the makeup of our very beings... killing essential microbes by the millions that help fight things and keep us balanced and literally alive.
well... that's gloomy....
Jen sounds like Ann is the woman to talk to. sound advice I think.
In some ways though, kids are kids and kids can be really weird. so can adults. I never actually liked kids all that much, but lately I prefer them over most adults I meet.
I'm the same way. I'm not a kid person - I love mine, but I'm not good with other people's children. But they tend to be more tolerable than other grown-ups, especially women. You guys rock, but most women drive me nuts. Y'all don't - which is why I love you. :D
I finished one pink sapphire earring today. I'm getting old - my hands ache.
