October already! Where did the summer go?!
All are welcome to chat with us. Carry on~

Re: Falling into October with the Chatty Metalsmiths

Glad you have access to good coffee now Kathy...

Erin, your winter climate generally sounds a lot like ours, but I think your summers are a lot hotter and we have never had it be 90 in February. High 60's but not 90! And thankfully we do not get hurricanes, though sometimes storms here can have hurricane force gusts.

That's nice to make something that will spend it's existence music Terri, and sounds like a good trade too.

I just sold a couple rings so have some sales dust to share.

Re: Falling into October with the Chatty Metalsmiths

Interesting development... there are now grizzlies in my area. People have been reporting sightings but conservation officers have been saying they must be mistaken.

A logging truck driver about 10 miles south of me got a couple of good cell phone pics, yep, it's a grizzly.

Black bears are great to share the bush with but grizzlies are flat out unpredictable.

Yay for the sales!

Summers get pretty hot - we had a lot of over 100 this year with the heat index. I'm glad for this break we're getting right now, at least until the hurricane comes through. They always bring sticky air with them.

That's a little nerve wracking - black bears generally will leave people alone.

Oh CG that is not a great development. yikes. I would not ever trust a grizzly.

might be time to get another dog... I know that is a tough subject... but honestly you do not want a grizzly sneaking up on you.

I am very happy to NOT have any bears here hoping for apples... Sorry you have some new less predictable ones as neighbors CG...

Re: Falling into October with the Chatty Metalsmiths

Dogs are good for warnings at home, not always so good in the bush with bears. My dog was great, he'd startle black bears with a brief rush, they'd go off in another direction and he'd come back instantly as soon as they headed off.

Grizzlies don't work that way. They fear nothing in the bush. If they choose to.

That moment when you take a bit of satisfaction is withdrawing your application for a holiday art show. I received a receipt of application in JULY and have yet to have any further communication from them on status.

o.O

So incredibly disrespectful.

It was kind of nice to wipe that slate clean. that means I won't have to do any shows in December unless something comes up at the last minute. this somehow removes a bit of stress from my shoulders.

Re: Falling into October with the Chatty Metalsmiths

CG - I meant more for the warning bark there at home... to warn you there may be a bear about. I wasn't suggesting that a dog could scare one off... more prepare you for what is out there.

My dogs cant scare a ground hog properly... Id not ever expect them to make a dent in a grizzlies attitude.

Re: Falling into October with the Chatty Metalsmiths

A few weeks ago there was bit in the news here about many bear encounters - black bears - in BC with injuries was for people having a dog with them. Dog harasses bear, bear charges dog, dog runs back to owner.

Black bears don't have great eyesight and if they're not used to humans, they usually will choose to leave, barring cubs. Grizzlies are king, and they can have attitude.

Re: Falling into October with the Chatty Metalsmiths

Hey all

Little bummed today. Got a crystal I ordered and at first was so excited because its beautiful as pictured. BUT upon closer inspection, I'm pretty sure I'm seeing air bubbles.

It was titled Cherry Quartz, which it doesn't look like any kind of Cherry Quarts I could find in research. I figured it might be a special kind of phantom quartz and I just couldn't find the name for it or something.

Also tried scratching some glass with it. No scratches made. Quartz is harder than glass so it should leave marks. :(

This is the listing:
https://www.etsy.com/listing/455236952/cherry-quartz-point?ref=shop_home_active_1

Anyone know quartz? I want to be sure before I message the seller. I'm hoping its just that she didn't know and was going off of what she was told by whoever sold it to her.

Re: Falling into October with the Chatty Metalsmiths

Bears aren't a problem here, much worse near Vancouver and people. and very low odds I'd ever see a grizzly around here.

In any case, a 'brave' dog would add to the risk.

But we don't have hurricanes, or tornadoes, or floods, or....

Re: Falling into October with the Chatty Metalsmiths

This might be useful:

http://www.wehug.com/difference-between-glass-crystals-and-natural-quartz-crystals.html

Near the bottom, #4, quartz is an electrical conductor, glass is an insulator. If you have a battery powered gizmo and some wire you could rig up a connection passing through the 'crystal'.

Re: Falling into October with the Chatty Metalsmiths

Cherry quartz as I've always seen it is glass. Her pictures make it very hard to see what it really looks like - and if it is glass, that pretty much cancels any of her metaphysical mumbo jumbo.

Re: Falling into October with the Chatty Metalsmiths

Thank you CG and Erin.

Hm, no battery thingamajigs around. I wasn't a huge fan of her pictures either. Very pretty, but I knew I was taking a risk with getting it because they are almost too pretty and edited to see whats going on. . . The only at all similar looking crystals I could find -at least on etsy- say they were treated quartz.

I don't generally believe in all the metaphysical stuff, but I will say at risk of sounding slightly nutty, usually with stones I do feel a sort of energy/vibration to them (for lack of a better word) and while I was super happy with it upon opening, the reason I began to question and look at it very closely was because something didnt "feel right" about it. Like its not cold enough to the touch, didnt feel energy or something like that.

The facets are also surprisingly sharp edged. That might just be what a crystal point feels like though. Dunno. Ugh, so bummed.

Re: Falling into October with the Chatty Metalsmiths

If you have really good magnification, along the ridges most likely you'd see tiny fan or shell shaped fractures. Crisp cut ridges in glass are very susceptible to tiny chipping.

Real stone would be cooler to the touch than glass, wouldn't it?

Re: Falling into October with the Chatty Metalsmiths

I do see some slight chippage going on with the edges of the facets. I'm pretty convinced its just glass. I have an amethyst cluster and tested scratching glass with that, left marks. The point I just got did not. UGH.

Also posted a couple clips to my IG story, but battery died before I could get close ups of the bubble situation. Waiting to get more charge now to show that and the slight chip on the bottom. I know Quartz generally fractures in a curved sort of way, glass more like flatter chips.

Edit, thats the other thing Erin, I have a tumbled amethyst piece as well as cluster and the tumbled rock feels like its been in a fridge. Cold to touch because it absorbs so much heat (thats the way I understand it) The "quartz" point doesnt feel as cold to the touch. Feels same temperature as the glass in my cabinets.

Re: Falling into October with the Chatty Metalsmiths

I thought there was no such thing as "cherry quartz", that it was a manmade stone, and usually glass.

I got my toggle clasp made last night, but the toggle bar was a little on the short side, so have to make another one. Not a big deal, it was easy to make.

Re: Falling into October with the Chatty Metalsmiths

It's a pretty crystal Jay. Don't know enough about their qualities to make even a guess.

Grizzlies have been supposed to be extinct here in Manitoba for years but there are sightings every once in a while by people living north of us. Nat Resource people and Park naturalists say it's a sign we are winning the climate change fight if they come back.

I would be really frightened of them though.
