Tell a freind has been around for a while, but not always. Even then when they announced it people were peeved it went to your personal FB as opposed to your business page people opt in to, because they didn't want to spam their friends.

Are you saying they're giving themselves permission to pick email addresses out of my private address book if they happen to be etsy registered?

That wouldn't be an opt out position, probably even legally. Would have to be 'opt in'.

You would have to give them permission, cg, as they would need you password, etc, even to get to your address book. Unless you have it tied to something else, like facebook, etc, but they would still need your login and password to get in.

It has to be all 'friends' and 'smiles' and cute names, and "automagically" so that they can get permission to tap into that goldmine.

Your email address book, whether it is on your own computer or online, like gmail, is protected by a password that only you know.

You would need to give that password to Etsy before they would be able to see your personal address book.

So where does the need to opt out come in? If you've already given them access for FB purposes?

I think they plan to use your own personal email address, the one you signed up to Etsy with, as a tool to 'connect friends'. If I am reading the notice right.

And sorry folks, got a little peeved. Broke my own rules. Kinda remembering something cg said in the past about typing before thinking.

Well, they can't. Sounds to me like it should be an 'opt in' only. I never gave permission for it to be shared beyond etsy the company.

Permission can be implicit in cases such as these: "By continuing to use this website, you agree to blah blah"

Not exactly the way I would run the world, but nobody asked. That is probably a good thing.

They will have the opt out thing in place.

An excerpt:

Last sentence, begging the question, if I know their email address, and I'm looking for them, why not just email them myself? What am I missing?

Me too, cg, there are other business things and decisions that I need to be focusing on. Thought Etsy was going to be more of a 'constant', and less 'variables' for the present.

I don't know folks I read the privacy policy twice with a fine toothed comb and I still don't know what the hell it says. I know I don't like ANY of the machiavellian bullshit going in around here lately. They wrote this post knowing full well it was going to freak people out and then aren't answering the obvious and inevitable questions it engenders. They're either incompetent morons or intentionally making it unclear and disturbing, what do you make of that?
