Re: Remember when....

I just got an order that needs a larger box than usual and I had a flashback.  Remember when you could wrap packages in brown paper and string when you mailed them?  It's a no-no now but we did it all the time when I was a kid.

Re: Remember when....

Hi GielDesigns, Yup, Butcher paper and string. Also, during the holidays the mail man (no women carriers back then) brought mail twice a day!! He didn't have a vehicle either. He had a big brown leather bag and walked the whole neighborhood.

Re: Remember when....

'Tis the season for Girl Scout Cookie sales. Nowadays, people bring order forms to their workplace or set up tables outside of supermarkets to get sales. In my day, we went door to door, alone, hawking our wares. Doesn't seem to be done anymore, too much "stranger danger." But were there any fewer pedophiles back in those days than today? Were people more trusting? Seems like a different world back then. Can't imagine a parent of today letting an 8-9 year old go door-to-door alone, even in a "safe" neighborhood.

Re: Remember when....

Dear, I observe nowadays, when there is a school activity which involves the kids to go door per door, they are always accompanied by an adult. In the past, the children were by themselves...

Unfortunately, the bad people always exists. Perhaps, because there was less communication in the past, some horrible cases became unknown.

It was in the local news in Chicago. Believe it or not. Girl Scouts stationed the cookies sale right outside one of those places which sale "recreational marijuana" and sold every single box.

They told the reporters, they thought about a place were a lot of people would go and have $ to pay for the cookies...

@psych62   @SwissZahlerArt

They've taken it a step further in my neighborhood.  A couple of years ago, a Girl Scout cookie pop-up store appeared in one of the vacant storefronts.  It was there last year too so I assume it's back again this year.  I have to take a walk over there and see.

Re: Remember when....

Now-a-days there are twice as many people as in the 50's or 60's. So.. lots more bad guys to fend off and we are no longer a village of people who know each other. Not that we were much safer back then, just fewer creeps. The first time I sold Girl Scout cookies they were .50 cents a box. Remember those horrible ugly uniforms? When my youngest daughter was in scouts I went everywhere with them as a volunteer as I didn't dare trust the leaders to safeguard those little girls with the same care as I would. The leaders were great, just not all that wise in the ways of the world.

Re: Remember when....

Talking about those cookies.  Honestly, I have not tried one yet in all of these years. I gave $ contribution to the girl scouts, but never ever bought a cookie. Why?  Because nobody has given a good comment about the cookies...

Re: Remember when....

I don't think Girl Scout Cookies are very good. I'll have one if there is an open box lying around work, if it's a flavor I like such as the Samoas or the lemon filled cookies. I hate Thin Mints, but then again I hate mint flavored anything. And the Trefoils are terrible. They used to be better - more buttery tasting. Now they are complete cardboard. The peanut butter cookies, I used to like them too, but they seem different now - drier.

Re: Remember when....

@SwissZahlerArtregarding the "pot shop" and the cookie sellers, perhaps they though setting up outside such a store would be good for business because after smoking pot, some people get cravings for sweet things/carbs? Just a theory.

Re: Remember when....

Sorry, I don't know about  secondary effects after consuming that kind of herb. The adult who was with the girl scouts, explained to the reporter that they selected an unusual store to sell their cookies, because a lot of people goes to that kind of store and they have to have money. So, they would get potential buyers.

Re: Remember when....

I asked my sons and daughters what do they remember when they growing up, that they do not see anymore.

1)  going to the school or public library very often for any kind of research, from homework to studies

   nowadays, it is just internet

2)  curfew - they don't conceive some parents do not restrict the time kids or teenagers must be back at home

3)  the healthy school lunch

4)  a nurse in every school to take care of any minor health situation from a scar, toothache, cut with the scissors in the Sewing class

5)  expelled from the school

6)  do chores at home and work after the high school hours

Re: Remember when....

I don't remember school lunches as being particularly healthy. I recall stuff like pizza, hamburgers, fish sticks, and BLTs....and this is well over 40 years ago. The quality was terrible, and pretty ill prepared. I'll never forget that undercooked bacon on those BLTs, it was practically raw. The bread was barely toasted too and the tomato was never ripe. Just one example.

Re: Remember when....

What I remember most about school lunch is how they served everything with an ice cream scoop.  Everything on those cheap, plastic, pastel colored plates was shaped like a little dome. Yuck.

Re: Remember when....

I used to like their overcooked Brussels sprouts, I didn't know that was overcooked so some years after school years, I tried to cook them the same way but just by accident that I found out I just needed to over boil them XD

I don't think I like them cooked that way now anymore.

I like to steam my brussel sprouts until they are very tender. I like them that way. They seem to be easier on my stomach that way. Also, I buy baby brussels - more expensive, but easier to digest.

I remember all of those storms.  I've missed snow over the past couple of years because I'm one of those strange people who actually likes it.  Winter has been way too "warm" for me lately.

Re: Remember when....

I remember the 1967 blizzard! I was 5 years old. I got stuck in a snowbank by myself (don't know how that happened) and a strange man found me kicking and crying and took me home. I remember him carrying me in his arms and handing me over to my parents. Can you see that happening today? I wonder where that man is today...……………..
