It seems like there should be a single thread where team members could just gather and catch up with eachother about nothing in particular.  It's nice to have other threads to discuss a particular topic, but would also be nice to have a thread where you could go to see who's around at that moment.

You know, like a never-ending, continuously running thread.

Thoughts?

@vlmkpyae

You struck me as the type who would know a lot about nature!

The reason that I asked, is a couple of years ago, a strange looking bird was visiting my yard all summer long.  He sort of  looked like a black-billed magpie with a tiny head and an extra long tail that forked at the ends.  I had never seen anything like it before and I'm wondering if it was a hybrid of some kind.

He didn't act like a regular magpie, but was always around them.  He was also very skittish.  Magpies are not skittish and this one was.

I forgot to mention.. the head of the bird shone a metallic blood red colour in the sun and the head closely resembled that of a northern flicker.

A little penny car racer / 2  pedometers / 9 ..... yes, 9 !  cigar lighters !  ..... Mr Mary likes to smoke them sometimes / and I think folks pick up supersonic lighters as a gift when they are out of ideas !  ......  Now we know where they are !!!  Tons of stupid stuff like paper clips, rubber bands , pens and pencils ........   and my favorite find of all was 1/2 of a peanut !!!

the drawer looks really nice at the moment :D !

We used to put a penny on the back of it / all ramp up the cars as kids / and see who won !  Haven't checked .... maybe there is some info online .

There is a pond in front of the apartment building I live in. My patio faces it. Quite beautiful. It is always loaded with ducks, geese, and a Crane that I call Mr. Peabody. Last couple weeks the pond has not had many visitors. Because they are all nesting someplace. Well, early this week I saw a mama and papa goose with 7 little baby geese trotting in between them! The cutest darn thing you ever saw.

You could tell the 'parents' were teaching them how to eat the grass. Yesterday was their first time in the water swimming! So cute cute!! BUT...in about a month or so those same babies and 'parents' will be around more and leaving goose poop by the tons on the grass! I walk across the lawn to get to the sidewalk and try to miss all the calling cards those geese leave behind. But enjoying them while they're still young and experiencing things for the first time.

@vlmkpyae. Good idea (is it Sill?). I will try and get some pics when I see them at the pond again. Cute does not describe these little honkers! I can hardly wait for the ducks to come back with their little duckies...now they are beyond cute!

@SewNSewSister

There is nothing cuter than a family of geese out taking a stroll.  Canada geese are very territorial, so don't get too close to the babies!

We have loads of Canada geese around here (being close to Canada and all) and man, they are aggressive.  Once I had gone out for a bike ride and was sitting next to the lake eating my lunch and these three Canadian geese come strolling towards me up from the water's edge.  It's a gray, cold day and there's no one around, just myself.  They're honking quietly and then two start flanking left and right, and the center one keeps on towards me. I jumped to my feet and they rushed me!  I'm holding my sandwich in the air and they're all stomping around me with their big beaks snapping. I stamped at them and they scarcely backed off.  I stuffed the rest of my sandwich in my face (I was hungry) and went for my bike and they all started flapping their wings and honking. These were some of the largest geese I had seen, too.

A bird thread is a nice idea.  We need one.  I love birds.

I'm also into saving our precious songbirds.

Birds are beautiful creatures and they are also very smart. We’ve got budgies now in a big, roomy and underpopulated aviary. We used to have whistling canaries and we played music to them all the time. They mimick and emulate so easy and whistled some of my favourites. I loved them, but they’re such a precious bird, they seem to die from all sorts of things. They’re very easiliy frightened and do die of fright. Poor things.

We live in a very bushy suburb of Brisbane now and over the years we’ve encouraged the ‘bush birds’ with good bush bird food. Twice each day they turn up (you can set your watch by them), make the biggest racket you’ve ever heard and enjoy our offerings. It’s a welcome kaleidoscope of every bright colour in the spectrum, especially with the Bush parrots. They’re so beautiful. Hehe!! We’ve had the odd unplanned visit to the shower to wash our hair too.

We have all number of breeds call through the day, so there’s always the beautiful harmonic sound of birds in the background. They also socialise with our three dogs. They’ve all been taught it’s a hanging offence to chase. Bush parrots become tame quite easily, but we don’t encourage that.

We also have our resident magpie family and they are quite tame, not that we’ve taught them to be. They too are a very smart bird. Some years ago we had one that would actually follow us inside to the fridge. Haha!! Making sure he didn’t miss out.

Birds have adapted fairly well to the human incursion into they’re habitats, nonetheless we take a lot for granted and don’t pay nearly enough attention to dwindling numbers in some species. We really need to be much more mindful.

Enjoy them while they’re still around. They’re beautiful.

melina.
