What to do with occluded gemstones?

Any ideas what to do with occluded gemstones? I have some that I have gotten from bead dealers through the mail that when I get a strand, I always get some that I can not or will not use. I try to provide the best product and I just can't bring myself to put a stone in that is occluded. Any ideas?

Re: What to do with occluded gemstones?

Occluded gemstones are often still very beautiful stones. You could try using them in designs where the gemstone is an accent and not the focal. Occluded stones might look good in more rustic designs also. As long as the stones are photographed well so that the buyers sees a true represenation of the stone and the occlusions are not "hidden", then you might be surprised at how many buyers don't mind the occlusions.

Picture frames, garden accessories, fish tanks, heavy wire wraps, candle holders, etc are all begging you to use these beauties on them. Can you deny their wishes?

Get creative.

Stones are perfect with imperfection. Your customers don't determine "like-ability" because their a occluded or included imperfection.

They buy your products because the style suits them, they love how you've assembled the bead structure or that necklace it going to9 go well with the jumper I bought last week.

Re: What to do with occluded gemstones?

It depends on the inclusions and the species of stone. I fully understand your point. If you have a strand of top amethyst and there are a few in the mix with large veils or phantoms inclusions they will definitely detract on the continuity of the strand and must be removed. One can expect this from time to time and either plan accordingly to have them removed or placed inconspicuously at the back, or buy extra to replace them.
A high quality setting and necklace requires consistency.
However many mineral stones are not so pure. Tolerance for such may be prudent, and a great deal of latitude is required. Some fine opaque Sugilite can be had for a hundred dollars a strand, up these to clear deep fuchsia/pink gel of Pure Manganoan Sugilite Silicate and you can add a zero to that number. Its to a certain degree matching the grade of stone to its application.
Also some stones would be no where without their inclusions, Rutilated Quartz, the Schiller in Oregon Sunstone, A degree of Jardin in Emerald, Tourmilinated Quartz, Fine Jaspers, Sagenitic Agates, Banded Agates, and Moonstones.
And every customer is different as to their expectations and desires.
Keep the strands/cabochons consistent and appropriate to the piece and cull the ones that arent up to par for the particular quality level in your specific project.

I pull out the ones I can't use and take very careful pictures and sell them as destash. Just because they aren't what I need doesn't mean someone else won't appreciate them.

Re: What to do with occluded gemstones?

So, how do I discreetly list them in my listings as to make them look desirable for those who suggested that clarity doesn't matter. And yes, I know some of you agreed with me!

Re: What to do with occluded gemstones?

Discreetly? Not sure what your meaning is. Sell them as is.
title them and describe them as they are IE, "Amethyst beads 8 loose ones I did need for my project. Contain some slight veils and are a bit color zoned, still a nice color and very pretty. Destash priced at....."

As long as the photos show the inclusions well you do not have to give any reason why they are culled. They are what they are. Show them clearly and describe them honestly.
But if you mean Discreetly as in not showing the inclusions or other flaws so the beads appear as better than they are thats a different story. Not that that is what you would do. Just saying. Sell them as what they are.

Re: What to do with occluded gemstones?

You could always set aside these stones and use them in one project. Then when listing them be honest about the stones and materials used.

I don't believe the customer would have reservations about purchasing if you disclose the inclusions/occluded gems.

My biggest pet-peeve is jewelry designers not describing their gems, minerals or jaspers correctly. I understand when you purchase from a trade fair or jewelry magazine you may not remember the stones accurate term. But it doesn't take long to research and use the 'given' name for the stones you use.

Our customers deserve that, honesty.

Re: What to do with occluded gemstones?

Oh, I didn't mean to hide the inclusions but to list them without saying they have ugly inclusions in them, how do I make the occlusions sound appealing? They wouldn't be appealing to me!

Re: What to do with occluded gemstones?

They might not suit your designs but ugly?? That's a bit harsh, lol.... think of them as having individuality & character, just like people ;-)

plenty of people would love some "unique gemstones with natural occlusions that give them character & charm... these pretty little *whatever they are* wear their hearts on their sleeves and are perfect for a myriad of individual projects..."

Re: What to do with occluded gemstones?

Actually I get confused between the terms occlusion and inclusion. Can anyone explain the difference.

I have always referred to the impurities in gemstones as inclusions. Inclusions give a fingerprint to the stone and make it unique. Personally I love the uniqueness and my engagement ring is an Indian Star Ruby with lots of inclusions and the most magnificent star which radiates in the sunlight.

Because precious stones are of more value when their are few to no inclusions, precious gemstones such as emeralds, rubies and sapphires are commonly treated to remove the inclusions to improve the clarity and to enhance the color. This must be stated and they are not worth nearly as much as untreated natural stones of the same quality.

Re: What to do with occluded gemstones?

If you absolutely, really think the stones are "ugly", why not list them as "Ugly ..... stones with veils and occlusions", then describe them correctly in the description. These kind of listings usually attract some buyers who have a similar sense of humor.

Re: What to do with occluded gemstones?

I like that. Ugly stones waiting to be adopted by someone who will love them for what they are. Imperfect (just like people) but fascinating (just like people).

Re: What to do with occluded gemstones?

Maybe these "ugly" stones could be used as birthstones - many birthstones have their uniqueness because of the inclusions in them. The more natural the birthstone the more power it will have to bring you good luck and healing. Read more about birthstones on www.fashionaccessoryshop.com/blog_1.html

Re: What to do with occluded gemstones?

Rather than point out your perceived flaws in those stones, simply highlight the fineness of the ones that are NOT occluded.

Naturally the higher grade stones will command a higher price.

Re: What to do with occluded gemstones?

I have a slew of funky stones and mis-stamped discs that I plan on making into some kind of hanging art or mobile.
