Stretch Magic

I've been making some light-weight bead bracelets using stretchy 'Stretch Magic' elastic cord, and I recently made a heavier hematite necklace with that material. My question is: does this material last? I know other stretchy things (rubber bands, for instance) wear out, due to exposure and use, rather quickly. Does any one have any longer-use experience with this stuff? Can I count on it lasting a good long time, or would some other stringing material work better? I like the way I can use its springiness to pull knots up into a reamed bead at the end of a bead run.
Any thoughts?

Re: Stretch Magic

"Stretch Magic" like any other elastic will give out from drying or over stretch with time, but the good news is that it takes this cord longer than others to do this. The best thing to insure longevity is to get the thickess possible variety for the beads you are stringing since it comes in 6 thickness from 0.5mm to 1.8mm to fit the hole openings best. As for the elastic stretching out over time there is nothing that can be done other than selecting light weight beads. Also to avoid fraying don't use beads that have sharp edges like Swarovski, unless you can ream the holes out of all the beads for a smoother glide all around. To insure the knot stays put both as knotted and within the end bead, dab with an epoxy before pulling it into the end bead then clip the extra strings.

Re: Stretch Magic

I have bracelets from 8 - 9 years ago that are still good. I wouldn't expect it to last forever but it is a really great product.

Re: Stretch Magic

Thanks, guys! I'm hoping for the best here, I guess I'll just have to keep an eye on the cord; it'd be a mess if it broke.

Re: Stretch Magic

I have used Strerch Magic for several years and like all elastic, it will eventually break/lose its' stretch.

I would advise NOT to tuck a glued knot into a bead. Unless the bead is really cheap and easily replaced, once the elastic breaks it is a real pain to ream out the glue so you can re-use the bead.

A double overhand knot will hold very well. The knot is not usually the problem in longevity. It is a rough bead hole or time.
