How to make symmetrical Even Patterns?

Whenever I make patterns for my own crafting projects I always have the suspicion fear that the line isn't straight or one side might be uneven. Does anyone have any tips for creating perfect patterns?

When I'm designing I've always used the 'mirror image' technique to create patterns. I'll work the design and once I've drawn the way I want it, I simply 'flip' the piece over and draw the other half.

I work on a ruled design mat so there isn't much chance of my not getting a straight line.

I have also tried this technique! The only thing is I sometimes get the side that's supposed to be "perfect" kind of wrong.

Maybe sewing isn't such a precise art if you aren't using computers and such.

How do you see through the fabric to the cutting mat?

I don't try to see through the fabric to the cutting mat. Once my pattern has been completed I simply place it on the fabric and work from there.

If your line isn't straight, then double check your straight edge that you are using.

Like anything else, it simply takes practice to get the pattern the way you want it.

I very rarely use computers to design my patterns. Most are done free hand.

The only thing that has worked for when I have to make my earrings mirror images of each other is a keen eye and LOTS of sand paper

But for something that's 2D I usually just fold tracing paper in half and get a mirror image that way...
