How to make seam binding

I would like to use the crinkled seam binding but I need it in massive amounts and it is just too expensive to purchase already made.
so, I would like to make my own.. from start to finish but i dont know what kind of fabric it is made out of or where to purchase the fabric.
Can anyone help?

Re: How to make seam binding

If I were you I would take a good look at the binding that you want to use and see what fabric its made from.

Seam bindings are usually either satin or cotton. But you can use just about any type of fabric.

I like to use a fabric that's compatible with whatever its being used on. That way there won't be any difference in shrinkage when its washed.

Most good fabric supply shops will have a reasonable selection of materials that you can choose from.

Re: How to make seam binding

Yep, rayon is a type of fabric. If you're intending to use it for hang tags, that will be easy. Seam binding is cut on the bias. When I've made some, I used cotton, cut it on the bias, and there's a little metal tool that you feed the material through a little at a time and iron it as it comes out-it folds the edges over perfectly. Not sure how that would work for rayon. Maybe create your binding and then mist the material with a water bottle, crinkle it up, then allow it to dry? That's what I would do.

The listing says it's rayon ribbon, so you might want to do some research to see what technique you should be using. The regular technique for creating seam binding might not be what you want.

Re: How to make seam binding

Making it yourself may be very time-intensive. Another option would be to talk to the seller about a quantity discount.

Re: How to make seam binding

Chimelle,
yes, you are correct, Ive researched and found that I need to mist with water and then crinkle it up. I am just wanting to take it a step further and cut the ribbon myself to save money. thank you for your advise about cutting the bias, I didnt know that. I will continue to research to find out what else I need to do.
thank you!
