Ordering Wire - spool vs. coil?

Hi, all. I'm about to order 6 difference ounces of wire from Rio and was wondering if there's any benefit to ordering either in coil form or in spool form.

In the past, I've ordered most of my wire from places I don't remember offering this choice (I.J.S., Thunderbird, Monsterslayer), but I need some other products that only Rio seems to offer, so I'm order from them this time around. Any opinions are appreciated.

Re: Ordering Wire - spool vs. coil?

I haven't ordered from Rio, but I like my wire in coils unless it's 26 soft or finer, or fine silver (.999). I store my wire in ziplock bags, in file folders, so coils are definitely more convenient for that. I made the mistake of getting GF 26HH on a spool; it was a pain, and I would get it in a coil next time.

I prefer coils. Mine always get tangled on a spool.

Re: Ordering Wire - spool vs. coil?

When I have more than 600.00 to pay for silver I buy from altamont.com out of California. It comes in soft coils in side plastic bags.

I have a friend who buys in spools, she can buy $1000.00's in silver and gold, wire at one time.

Me, not so much.

altamont.com appears to be a software company. ?

Do you use altasilver.com ?

I don't mean to be snarky. I'm always looking for good deals on wire. :)

I like the coils better than spools. It's a lot easier to untangle wire when it's in a coil.

Re: Ordering Wire - spool vs. coil?

I prefer coils to spools also. The wire I have gotten on spools were so tightly wound that they were difficult to straighten (like to make earwires or head pins).

For me, it depends on the gauge. 24 ga. and 22 ga. I like on spools. Anything thicker I prefer in coils.

Re: Ordering Wire - spool vs. coil?

They have plate silver and brass, but mostly I buy dead soft round in 16, 18, and 20 gauge for my wire wrap. They are fair market pricing on the hour.

They are close to where I live and I don't have to pay much for shipping.

I order by phone, and it does seem they've updated their website from altamont to altasilver. 595-5915 the number I call to order.

I'm happy with their service and prices.
There's alos a seller here on etsy that I have ordered from too:

I like the spools.
I think it keeps it neater and easier to keep track of the gauge because it's written on the spool.

Re: Ordering Wire - spool vs. coil?

I like spools. I line them up on a shelf and can easily see and grab what I need. And it's easy to see what I need to order. If something comes in a coil, I'll wrap it on a spool.

It's so much easier for me to keep track of.

Re: Ordering Wire - spool vs. coil?

Coils are best.

Keep a twist tie on the coil and "Reverse Push" a few feet back thru the twist tie to work with it.

If you take the twist tie off the coil it will "Explode" like a crazed slinky.
