shipping estimation

Jump to solution

When I create a listing I put in the weight of the item.  When a buyer buys an items they specify the type of shipping they would like.  Then I go in and put in the size of the box, weight, etc...  There is a disparity between what the buyer paid and what I am paying for shipping.  How can I avoid paying more for shipping?  Am I missing something?

When  you create the listing, you need to put in the weight and measurements of the item you are selling with the bubblewrap or whatever you use for padding, but NOT the box size. Then you go over to your postage settings and set up all the box sizes you normally use if they aren't already there. Delete any box sizes you don't use. Etsy will then select the smallest box size the whole order will fit in. The box needs to be at least 1/2" larger than your item, or it will select the next larger box size.

You also need to set up in your Shipping Profile the classes of postage you offer. First Class has been defunct for a long time (except for letters) but if you use Calculated Shipping, they don't have a choice for Ground Advantage, which combined parcel  post and first class. So you will need to select Parcel Post and/or First Class and Priority Mail as options. Parcel post (also defunct) usually doesn't collect quite enough for Ground Advantage (the new class) and First Class will automatically bump it up to Priority Mail if the item weighs a pound or more (when Ground Advantage allows up to 70 pounds.

Personally, I use the First Class, and refund when Etsy collects too much.

I added an item to my cart but there is nowhere for me to specify the type of shipping.

Thank you.  I need to probably take a closer look at how big my item is with packaging.  I sell a lot of different items that usually need wrapping around it.

@MaryCainsCabinet What sort of disparity are you seeing?

I added an item to cart and was offered FCM, PM and PME... all looks correct; however ...

For calculated rates, sellers should be selecting FCM + Parcel Select Ground, which enacts the correct Ground Advantage rates & times, and will cover ALL orders up to 70-pounds ... adding PM or PME is only for speedy deliveries and should not be used UNLESS the buyer actually paid for the upgrade service.

Thank you.  The buyer chose ground at$ 4ish dollars.  When I went to create the shipping label is was $8.00.  I guess I need to look closer at the weight of the items with packaging?
