"A variation image is missing its associated variation" ERROR

I originally had my custom digital listings listed using the "physical item" listing type. They had variations with associated pictures. I am converting the listing type to  selected.

I deleted the associated variations photos (since there are not variations with the "digital item" with "made to order" listing type), but I am getting this error when I go to publish: "a variation image is missing its associated variation".

There aren't associated variations with this listing type, so why is this error being triggered? I cannot update my listings now.

My only thought would be to do it in stages.

first edit to remove the photo link. save.

then edit to remove the variation. save

then edit to change to made to order. save

I actually tried that. The error comes up no matter which way I go about it, which I find odd.

I also had this problem but managed to fix it.

You need to make it a "Physical" item and go and delete all your previous variations. Then select "Digital" again and it should work.

I figured it out!! I needed to delete each variation first BEFORE deleting the image. If I delete the image first, then the variation, this error comes up.

I am also getting this error a lot today. I've been adding new listing every day and when I add variations, it really triggers that same warning.
