X-rated pictures when signing in and in my search feed

Jump to solution

This just started happening to me as well:  https://community.etsy.com/t5/Technical-Issues/X-rated-stuff-on-my-search-page/m-p/129591263/   I signed out a couple of days ago, and when I signed in again, Vanna White in lingerie appeared in my feed.  Today, I signed out again, and when signing in again, every picture in the search feed was so x-rated that it was too explicit even for Playboy.  At least Playboy's pictures don't look smutty.  The center picture was of a spreadeagled naked woman so that the picture that first greeted me had me looking up a woman's crotch!  It says at this link that Pornography and Mature Content is prohibited:  https://help.etsy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360024112614-What-Can-I-Sell-on-Etsy-?segment=selling.  I am not interested in anything remotely mature related, nor have I searched for anything that is.  If I could block anything remotely mature related, I would since all I am interested in on Etsy are items relating to my business or craft items I may wish to purchase.

I see from what is above that if you search for something that might have a dual meaning, then mature content may appear in your feed, but the only items I've searched for recently are in relation to crafts, and nothing I can think of has a dual meaning.

I tried finding something in my account settings which would allow me to block mature content, but this feature does not seem to exist.  Someone mentioned above how to change your settings, but those settings do not appear for me.

Try this if you wish.  Go into Shop Manager > Privacy > Clear Recently Viewed Listings (don't forget to Save).
Then go about clicking on things you are interested in .  See if that makes a difference.  I hope it does.

Privacy settings can be accessed more easily by going to your user account settings rather through the shop manager. there you can clear your recently viewed listings. Go to the Etsy home page and click on your user icon, not shop icon.

ETA I see you already said this but I'll leave my comment here for clarity.

@ChillwolfArt:  If I click on the Shop Manager icon on the main page, it takes me into Shop Manager, but there is nothing on the left or in the middle that I can see that says Privacy.  There is a link at the bottom of the screen, but that takes you to this page:  https://www.etsy.com/legal/privacy/?ref=ftr.

Update:  I just figured it out.  You click on the down arrow to the right of your icon that is to the right of Shop Manager.  Then you click on Account Settings, and there is a Privacy tab.  I access Etsy through a desktop computer.  Perhaps you're accessing it through the app and it looks different for you?  Anyway, thank you for your help.  Let's hope it makes a difference.  I'm rather hesitant to try it out so I don't get another eyeful up other women's crotches.  Ugh.

@StitchRoundabout

I'm sorry, I left that IMPORTANT Step out (the one you figured out and  @Amaradorn   stated).

That is what I should have said FIRST (go into Acct. Settings next to your Avatar (top Right of pg. on Etsy, not Forums).  Then once you are in, select "Privacy".
I apologize for missing that crucial part.

Hope this is working for you so far.
(Also, it would be a good idea to highlight Amaradorn's post as a Solution.  I should have stated it in the beginning).

@Amaradorn

Thank You very much for correcting me.  I should have stated this in the beginning; it's an important part of the step and one I missed.  I appreciate your post.

I'm having the same problem, and clearing the recently viewed items doesn't help. My homepage feed is full of these photos at the top under "Shops we think you'll love." I even tried logging into Etsy using a different browser whose cache I cleared.

@HollyKnottLLC

Did you try clicking onto several various items (perhaps before doing this action, again select "Clear Recently Viewed Listings". *Don't forget to hit "Save" after (it's easy to miss, for me anyway).
__________

I've never received these types of items on my Home Page thus far (I have had my own items "suggested" to me last Fall, lol.  Perhaps because I was typing in search phrases Incognito to see where they fell, I don't know (I always use the same computer, browser, etc.).
I've also never used a mobile for Etsy anything (nor the app, which I've heard can be glitchy).  I know you said you use a browser. But this is just in case you tried various things.

Hope this is helpful to you in some way.

Re: X-rated pictures when signing in and in my search feed

I was thinking about what I was searching on Google for recently, and one thing was a knitting pattern for a women's top that had a bizarre name - a "garter gusset tee" of all things, and although I put it in quotes (which don't work on Google anymore, but I try anyway, darn it), I got back pics of women in lingerie wearing garters, so that may have triggered the smutty stuff.  Prior to that, I searched for investments which flooded my phone's newsfeed with posts about stocks, so the trick then might be to do a search or, better yet, a bunch of searches for something that can't be deemed in any way as sexual.  That was a suggestion in that link I added above, so it's worth a shot anyway.

@HollyKnottLLC: Did you close your browser and then restart your computer afterwards?  Some people constantly put their computer into sleep mode, but restarting after clearing your cache helps it run better.  I also go into the settings in Firefox and then the Manage Exceptions section weekly and delete companies that I don't want to have track me, such as news sites or anything with "ad" or "track" in the name, plus anything that I'm not familiar with because I find that they slow down my computer.  I use Firefox on a Mac, and to do that, I click on Firefox, Preferences, Privacy & Security, and then under Cookies and Site Data, I click on Manage Data.  Then I scroll through the list and click on a site I want to remove, then Remove Selected, Save Changes, and Remove.  I actually do that after clearing my cache, then close my browser and restart my computer.

@ChillwolfArt - Thanks for your suggestion. I did click on several other "normal" products and save, cleared out the cache again, rebooted, etc. It finally seems to have corrected itself but what I think did it for me was not the cache clearing or the reboot, but just clicking on a ton more products to fill its head with newer ideas! (I'm replying here as there is no Reply button right under your comment... odd!)
