It's been a while since I've done a variation listing from scratch and I currently don't have any that I could copy. Hope this makes sense and someone can enlighten me.
I'm trying to add a new listing with 5 different card sets available (first variation) with a quantity for each. Buyers can also choose to have sentiments on the cards or not (second variation) with a quantity for each. I have four options for sentiments (plus a no sentiment one) but only 3 of each.
When I put in the variations (in the pop out window), it looks like it always has. When I click back, I get the variations as a whole list with every single combination listed.
It appears ok in the preview but there's no way to adjust the quantities for the second variation. I need to be able to do this because I don't have 5 of each sentiment set.
Thanks for your replies.
It appears my only option is to not set qty on the second variation ... and hope that no one buys more than 3 sets with the same sentiments. I'll just have to manually delete the sentiments as they sell out. Good thing I'm not a high volume seller : (
Without going into my shop manager to refresh my memory about variations, it sounds like you are packing too many decisions into one listing. And to ask for quantity twice seems really confusing for the buyer. What if they want four sets all of the same sentiment?
@riverofbeautydesigns and that's my problem. They can't have 4 sets with the same sentiments because I only have 3 of each sentiment sets. I'm not asking buyers to set a quantity on the second variation. They just have to choose the card set they want, and the sentiments they want on those cards.
The sentiments are quite different to each other so hopefully I can get away with no quantity on the second variation and just mark 'sold out' on the ones I no longer have.

You need qty varies ticked on both options.
You get a list of each option together, so if you have 1 of Small Red, you input 1, if you have 0 small red, you can use the visible toggle at the end to hide that combination.
Preview doesn't show qty or price for variations. You'll only know when you publish.
example
design 1 sentiment 1 qty 3
design 1 sentiment 2 qty 3
design 1 no sentiment qty 3
design 2 sentiment 1 qty 3
design 2 sentiment 2 qty 3
etc etc
You can't specify a different qty for each variation. So you can't have 5 design 1, and 3 sentiment 1.
@CappuccinoLace I get what you're saying and I have ticked the qty varies for both variations.
The problem is the second variation is not tied to the first. If I get someone who buys all 5 sets and wants the same sentiment set on each I'm sunk. I can' t leave it as it stands now ... a qty of one for every variation (first and second). I don't want to limit the variation choices to particular sets either. I can't have qty 3 on the second variation for all the first ones either.
I've not done a listing like this before (with different qty for both variations) but I've done listings with two variations and I'm pretty sure they were never listed all together like this.

It's because you wanted qty varies on both variations. It lists it like that. Or if you chose price varies on both. I've used it quite often.
Thanks for your replies.

Can you put the qty on the sentiments and not on the design?
no sentiment would be the qty of all sets of design.
You would then only have to alter the no sentiment option to how many sets you have left.

This is only a guess, as I can't preview it.
