UK VAT

A few years ago I was earning enough that I met the UK threshold for needing to be registered for VAT. So I did and gave Etsy my number. A year ago I de-registered as I was no longer anywhere near the threshold and I even spoke to Etsy to confirm they no longer required me to be registered. I was told only they could remove the number from my shop so I contacted them and it got removed, I could no longer see the number on my shop (from buyers POV) and Etsy started charging me VAT on seller fees. Yesterday I had to change my address as I had moved, I changed it in about 4 places on my seller account, one being in the legal and tax info. I was on the phone to someone at Etsy at the time who was helping me and I noticed my VAT number was still showing, I questioned this and he said it was fine. However I have now recieved an email saying my VAT info is incorrect and I need to update it. I’m assuming it doesn’t like the fact my new address doesn’t match the addesss that was attached to my VAT number. The issue is I don’t need to be registered I am no where near the threshold anymore and my number shouldn’t still be on my account and the number is no longer active with HMRC. Has this happened to anyone? I’m not sure how long they’re going to give me to fix this before they potentially shut my shop down. also, I had to add my UTR yesterday too, however that goes in the additional taxpayers info section. So because of how little I’m making the VAT section should be blank but not sure what’s happened as I was under the impression Etsy removed it when I asked them to.

Re: UK VAT

are you still paying VAT on your fees? if so, etsy isn't doing anything with the vat number

have you updated HMRC with your new address, so the UTR check will be correct?

and whatever ID you used - so uploaded a new drivers licence .... etc

Re: UK VAT

hi, thanks for your response, this has now been sorted. as I explained I de-registered for VAT. yes I am paying Vat on fees. as Etsy is VAT registered all sellers have to pay VAT on fees the VAT only gets removed when you are VAT registered. I contacted Etsy to explain and they agreed the number should have been removed so have now removed it for me.
