I no longer have access to the phone number I originally registered my shop with. And because of that I can no longer change my phone number or turn off 2fa because it sends a verification code to my old number. Fortunately I had kept the backup list of codes and have been using them since. I am now running out of codes.
The Etsy documentation (https://help.etsy.com/hc/en-gb/articles/115015569567-How-to-Make-Your-Account-More-Secure) points to the Account settings > Security tab where you can "regenerate" a new list of codes. Unfortunately there is no such option. There is no "regenerate" button.
It seems like the "regenerate" button has been removed as I seem to remember it being there before.

MugginsUK can you use one of your remaining backup codes you previously downloaded as the code needed to turn off 2fa? When you set up 2fa again you then have to enter the phone number so can put your new number and you’ll get a new set of backup codes.
I agree there used to be an option to regenerate codes, but I guess that was less secure as a hacker who had got into the account could then use the regenerated list to switch off and divert to their number, unless you had to 2fa for that to work - I never tried so can’t say.

Re: Two Factor Authentication - no longer able to generate backup codes.
I just set up two factor authentication - but I'm using Duo instead of my phone.... not sure if you are able to change the method once it's been established?? I was using Duo for Twitter and just added Etsy to the app.

Re: Two Factor Authentication - no longer able to generate backup codes.
From the Security screen, it looks like you can turn off the 2FA... maybe if you turned it off you could turn it back on with a new number? or different method? if that still sends a message to your original phone, not sure what other workarounds there might be.

Re: Two Factor Authentication - no longer able to generate backup codes.
Any change you might want to make has to be validated by a code sent to your phone. So it is catch 22. You can't change your phone number (or authentication method) because the change has to be validated by sending a code to your previous number, which you don't have.

Re: Two Factor Authentication - no longer able to generate backup codes.
@MugginsUK: Are you trying to do this using an Etsy app (on which operating system) or via mobile browser or desktop browser (which browser and operating system)?

Re: Two Factor Authentication - no longer able to generate backup codes.
Desktop browser, chrome on windows 10. But I am pretty sure this has nothing to do with the issue. I think Etsy has just deleted the option to regenerate codes and not updated their documentation.

Re: Two Factor Authentication - no longer able to generate backup codes.
Your OP made me think I better check my listed phone # on Etsy to insure it's the current one and not the # from 7 years ago before turning on the two factor authorization.
I went through all the settings on all the pages under "My Account" and no where do I see where I can check/edit the phone # Etsy has. I know I had to give them one when I started.
But where is that information tucked away at so I can see it or edit it??

Re: Two Factor Authentication - no longer able to generate backup codes.
@InGrammasAttic
You can find your phone # under shop manage > finances > payment settings > address.
Then edit legal shop information.
I didn't find my phone # listed anywhere else.
I looked on all the tabs on "account settings" and only saw a tab for my address (not a phone #).

Re: Two Factor Authentication - no longer able to generate backup codes.
It should be Account Information > security. But you can't edit it unless you have access to your old number.

Re: Two Factor Authentication - no longer able to generate backup codes.
I set up 2FA Verification this week-end and it worked once and has never asked for verification since... If I look at my Account Settings, 2FA Verification is turned on.

Re: Two Factor Authentication - no longer able to generate backup codes.
@Pedricks: Per https://help.etsy.com/hc/en-us/articles/115015569567-How-to-Make-Your-Account-More-Secure
How two-factor authentication works
With two-factor authentication, you’re required to enter your password and a verification code when you sign in using a different browser or on a new device; and every 30 days.

Re: Two Factor Authentication - no longer able to generate backup codes.
I quite often clear my browser so that I am not tracked across the internet. In the last week or two I've stopped that, just so I don't have to log into Etsy again.

@InGrammasAttic: The two factor authorization info and settings should be under account > security

Re: Two Factor Authentication - no longer able to generate backup codes.
Thank-you!!! I had not noticed that and it makes a great deal of sense! I use 2FA Verification on all other accounts that involve money and those all require a code each and every time I sign in. Glad to know why Etsy doesn't. Whew!

Re: Two Factor Authentication - no longer able to generate backup codes.
Nobody has answered the question about regenerating backup codes. The point of the question is the ability to generate backup codes. Which you can't.

Re: Two Factor Authentication - no longer able to generate backup codes.
@MugginsUK: It used to be at Account > Account Settings > Security be we just checked and both the 2FA editing function and the generate backup codes button are gone.
Perhaps one of the Etsy admins can update this thread with where the options have gone to? Help Pages still incorrectly point to the Security tab.

Re: Two Factor Authentication - no longer able to generate backup codes.
This is exactly why I do not want 2FA. When I signed up (2008) I did have to give my phone number (landline). I cannot now find it in any of my accounts.

Re: Two Factor Authentication - no longer able to generate backup codes.
@ThePurplePuppy
Here you go, took a while to find where the phone # is:
shop manage > finances > payment settings > address
That's the only place I found it.
I thought it used to be under "account" > addresses but I only see my name/address, no phone #.

Thanks! I'll give it a look (thought I had looked there>maybe not), but I am not changing it until they force 2FA on us!

Re: Two Factor Authentication - no longer able to generate backup codes.
I still have 2FA verification turned on and I still have only been asked to verify once, right after I turned it on.
It is very un-nerving to have this turned on and never get a request to verify myself when I log in... If you've ever been hacked, then you know this can be scary.

Re: Two Factor Authentication - no longer able to generate backup codes.
MugginsUK is absolutely right, because no one here understands what happened.
With me is the same problem, here again explained very simply:
1. 2FA was deposited and activated with the phone number xxx.
2. In the meantime the phone number had changed and there is no more access to old phone number xxx.
3. To deactivate 2FA, a security code is sent from Etsy to the OLD phone number xxx, which no longer exists!
And now??? Please urgent help from Etsy administrators!
Thanks a lot,
Nicky

Re: Two Factor Authentication - no longer able to generate backup codes.
@TheBDSMCouple: At the time you enabled 2FA you were offered the opportunity to download backup codes. If you have those you can use one to login. If you do not, you will have to contact Etsy support to have them disable 2FA on your account.
