It seems that Etsy has made recent changes to the thumbnail editor but it still does not do what it is supposed to do which is to let us adjust our thumbnail photos! Why Etsy?
If you are trying to edit via the thumbnail edit in the listing, no it's not working. The image itself will have to be cropped (in the Transform area first. Afterward, the thumbnail image can be edited. But I can't redo the thumbnail again once this is done. It's not ideal, but it's worked for me.
I used to be able to crop up until a couple of days, now I don't even have that option anymore and am just stuck with sporadic weird looking thumb nails. Some let me adjust and some don't, its so frustrating!
I've resorted to create a "cover photo" that's basically how I'd like the image to look if the cropping tool worked. I've given up it ever working and tired of spending 10 minutes per listing to make it adjust correctly. This issue makes me think about how the average American driver spends about 54 hours a year stuck in traffic. My guess is that we spend twice as much as that trying to adjust thumbnails.
@CrabandCrow Photos need to be square not vertical or long. The thumbnail will not work with vertical photos. Etsy moved to square a year or two ago
It won't work well because your photos are vertical rather than horizontal or square. 4:3 is preferred.
The thumbnail aims for the center which is on vertical photos is much lower than on square.
My new photos are square. They've been square since they implemented the square format. That's when the cropping/tumbnail issues started. Doesn't matter if they are square or 4:3. I did just try the Transform function and then try and crop as the other poster suggested and it worked. Not sure if it will always work since this function seems very unstable. We shall see.
We are having the same problem. Using Firefox ... and having squares of sufficiently large an area for images ... I adjust the image ... it looks fine in their preview image, but then there is no possibility to enter the new information ... the etsy system does not recognize that one has made an adjustment or change, and the button to have the system accept it and finish the transaction is grayed out. Also the box wherein one could place a meaningful description after adjustment is missing from the page. It is an Etsy problem - not any peculiarities of our browsers. As I said - we are on Firefox - and always have been. Hope Etsy can fix this.
I don't know if this new format is a test or something currently being rolled out to everyone? Does anyone know?
My EDIT button opens up a blank page, so there's no way to edit anything. The new method of adding alt text to images is beyond dumb. The prior photo section allowed for easily seeing what images had alt text. Now you have to click the text button for each individual image to add it. They need to fire their UI designers. These are people who have clearly never run a shop. They do not care about efficiency for sellers at all.
I think something is being rolled out because the transform feature was available to me a couple days ago and now it no longer is. All I have to work with is a broken thumbnail editor. And I agree, someone on Etsy's coding team sucks at their job.
With the new format, the option to add alt text doesn't show up at all now. It did this morning, but only afer I clicked on "adjust thumbnail". This morning the thumbnail did stayed adjusted, so hopefully that will stay. If this is a test, I think they are still working on it.
Edited to add - okay, maybe the thumbnail still isn't working - I just redid one I finished a few minutes ago - I thought it worked, but it didn't stay adjusted. So I did it again, we'll see. And can't find the way to add alt text.
