Thumbnail cropping issue.

Jump to solution

Good afternoon!

I guess i am not the only one who all of a sudden has issues with this. When i started on etsy a year ago it was all ok with the size i was using as i am currently using 1000x1000 photos. Anyone has a solution for this problem as i think it impacts the look of the product alot.

Thank you!

I have to add blank space to make my pictures square and then the thumbnails work just fine.  The only time I have a problem is when I try to modify a thumbnail in an existing listing.  Sometimes it will not recognize the new picture and insist on the original thumbnail.  If I wait a couple of days and try again it works.

Since etsy went to square thumbnails you have to take your photo in landscape mode, ie they are wider than longer. I have to do that with my sewing patterns also. It's a pain!

I am guessing that you are using the thumbnail adjustment tool.

It still saves the adjusted thumbnails as 5:4.

Etsy converts the 5:4 thumbnail image to square for the shop home page by cropping off at each side.

Meanwhile, Etsy converts the 5:4 thumbnail image to square for the search pages by adding extra top & bottom from the original full image.

To avoid problems upload a new square first image, and don't use the thumbnail adjustment tool. Etsy will then use the full square image for both the shop home page and search results.

I have no problem with the thumbnail.  It has been working fine for me in the new template.

It's possible that since your items are rectangular and not square that you will have issues with the thumbnail.

My original photos are square funny enough this is why i don't understand the issue. It was all ok until 2-3 months ago.

Typical of modern software apps being rushed out the door with no thought about user experience. The thumbnails on the shop's landing page are square, but the adjustment tool displays them as a rectangle. It requires tweaking, saving, publishing the listing, refreshing the shop landing page, and then repeating the process 15+ times before you can get it right. I nominate this feature for a Darwin Award in the software category.

I have no problem with using the crop feature on the new listing form. Its the only thing I like about it.

When taking photos always leave extra space around the item. Then use the crop feature when adding a photo. They have a square one, use that. Easy peasy.

I'm having a problem where the thumbnail doesn't save the way I crop it in edit. I have to go back and change it 4-5 times before it actually works, and I'm not sure what I do differently to make it work. Very frustrating and time consuming.

It's really a pain to have to adjust each image 20 times before the thumbnail works and then just accepting whatever looks acceptable-ish. How much are we paying Etsy again!? To anyone that has become just as disillusioned with Etsy- I have mostly moved back to eBay and while the fees are more (15% vs 9% without any shop subscriptions on either platform) the finances are crystal clear, the bulk posting is built-in, and I've never had a single issue with the thumbnails. Additionally, I've made more sales in 1 week back on eBay than I did in a month of continuous activity on Etsy. After a full financial analysis, I have made substantially more profit on eBay, even with the increased fees. They ended up being worth it to avoid the incredible inconvenience of working with Etsy's platform.
