I’m restarting my Etsy shop after a long hiatus. When you view my shop rating in the Etsy app, which defaults to “suggested,” it lists all of the bad reviews first, despite my shop having an overall rating of 4.9 & over 1k in sales.
To say this will impact my shop sales is an understatement. Etsy’s bizarre and unfair algorithms are now ruining my chances of reviving my shop. Support even confirmed the above to me, and tried to see if it could be fixed. He was told it’s just how suggested listings work and nothing could be done.
Etsy needs to fix this issue because other shops’ ratings don’t look like this. It’s clearly a coding/tech issue with the app.
Adding: The only recent review I have from months ago is a 1-star review because I had to cancel the order due to hospitalization for unexpected health issues. The customer received a full refund. Still left a bad review because he wanted the item, knowing it was health related. So my overall shop rating also shows as 1-star in search. That’s also unfair and messed up, but at least that is due to Etsy’s new policies. If people click, they should see all the 5-star reviews. But instead. The app is rating me 1-star & showing people only bad ones.
Unfortunately, even when changing the view to 'most recent', that 1 star review is still shown first. The review before that is dated September 2023 and it dropped off in September of this year. In this respect, it's not really a coding/tech issue. As you know, a shop's rating is based on a rolling 12-month period, so even if that 1 star was buried, your shop rating would still be 1 star.
Since you just reopened after a long hiatus, hopefully your next sales will come with 5-star reviews.
I understand the 1-star review showing first. What I don’t understand is the app’s default view showing my few bad reviews at the top. One, I think people could overlook. But several in a row? No one is going to buy from me.
Etsy will not fix it. You will need to start selling so the 1 star drops down.
No one’s going to buy anything when the app just shows all the bad reviews at the top, though.
@RefinedRuffian You have a lot of good reviews and don't think that one will really hurt. You just started up again and it takes time to get found in search. Give it time. You have a very nice shop.
Thank you.
Etsy wants people to see how the shop is performing most recently.
so the stars at top left are for the last 12 months, star seller is for the last 3 months
when etsy does it's calculation in march, that one star will no longer be counted in the stars on the top left, so if you have some good reviews by then, you will be back up to 5*
....
anyone who has a 1*, it will show at the top, ntil you get more reviews, it doesn't stop them from selling
I had one myself - it didn't have any affect on sales
The low reviews don't show on all listings in a browser. And not everyone uses the app. So I suggest moving forward. Capitalize on what you can do best. Striving for that rather than focusing on what went wrong only saps your energy.
I looked and didn't see the one star on the first page of reviews when set to "Recommended".
I always look at the first page of the most recent reviews; one is 4 star - nothing bothersome, one is 1 star - hadn't received it yet - also not bothersome as it wasn't a seller issue. Suggested reviews page 1 doesn't have the 1 star. You're good to go. Best wishes for a great 2025!
@RefinedRuffian It's been two weeks since you started this thread and it looks like you've had several 5 star reviews since then. when I looked at "suggested" every review on the 1st page was 5 stars. I think you're good.
@LaRenaissanceGirl That's what I also saw when I looked at her shop!
Looking at your shop, I don’t see a negative review until page 2 of reviews.
However, your shop looks like 4 stars to me, which as a customer, would give me pause because it takes A LOT of negative reviews for a shop with over 1,000 sales to bring a shop rating down from 5 to 4 stars.
