I try hard to keep my star seller badges. This month someone contacted me after a purchase I made (so nothing to do with my shop) to say thank you and because I didn’t respond to it, is making me lose my star seller this month as I’ve had 17 relatable to my shop question which I’ve answered and 1 from my purchase
The systems can not tell if messages are from a seller or buyer so all have to be replied to even if no reply is required
The rules are clear: respond to all fist-time contact messages.
You have missed a salient point in the measuring criteria , it says it measures ALL messages.
If this metric bothers you , here are some option you may consider in the future ....
1. activate your automated messaging
2. if this happens use your spam option
3. open an account to buy
Id recommend reading the Star seller info again
You made the purchase from your shop account which means the purchase is associated with your shop.
All messages require a response or a spam.
@VINTAGEbytheMAGPIE says re-read the rules or if you haven't read them, do it now. There are other things that you may run afoul of without knowing what the rules are.
The rules for 2-1/2+ years have stated messages from buyers or sellers must be replied to within 24 hours.
@Mintjellygifts The one thing in your favor is that you only need 2 replied to messages to get back to 95%...that is if all 17 have been within this rating period. Each rating period it takes 19 replied to messages to offset 1 not replied to.

@Mintjellygifts: "... and because I didn’t respond to it, is making me lose my star seller ..." Undoubtedly, almost everyone is wondering why you chose not to answer? The Star Seller metric for messages is very simplistic and binary - either you replied to (or marked as SPAM) that first message of a new incoming thread within 24 hours or you did not.
As it says right on your Star Seller page and elsewhere, you need to reply to the FIRST message of EVERY NEW INCOMING THREAD within 24 hours. It does not matter who sent it, the subject matter, if it is a duplicate or blank or anything else. If it is SPAM then it should be marked as such.
A controversial workaround : if the unanswered new thread is not a Help Request, at least for the time being, it appears that marking an unanswered new thread as SPAM (even after the 24 hour deadline has passed) will cause your reply percentage to change in a day or two (but not retroactively) if the original message was within the current star seller period. Note that subsequent messages from that account may go directly to the SPAM folder. However this may not update quickly enough for the February Star but it certainly is worth trying.
@Mintjellygifts Hi, Sorry you were dinged for this. Just so you know, one day you may receive a Message from a Seller whom you are friendly with ("How's it going"? for example). This still counts as you need to Respond or Mark as Spam, because you are not the Initiator of that Message. I've also received Messages from Sellers that I have purchased from. I have the one account (for both buying and selling). Before and after the S Seller, I would respond "Thank You" (or something similar).
Hope this helps.
It takes 2 seconds to add a smile emoji.
It takes months to get a star for messages if you don't get many messages.
Just weigh which is more important, a 2 second reply or SS.

These posts always puzzle me - when did it become alright to be rude? "Someone thanked me and I didn't think I needed to respond to that"...We see it all the time in these posts.
My parents taught me and I, in turn, taught my children.....
When someone "thanks" you - you don't ignore them - you say "You're welcome". It's so easy to do that.
Exactly. I always reply it is just being courteous and it certainly does not cost anything.
Basically etsy can have a bad system but it's on you not them, same thing literally just happened to me a joke u contacted support and they was no use, even though the messages flooding my account are all fraudulent and that's obvious as they are all called etsy technical support that's on etsy not the sellers to suffer
Someone messaged me this morning that they hate my shop name. I messaged back "LOL."
All messages require a response if I want to keep that cute l'il badge.
Hi I get flooded with fake accounts I have had 100% message response 2 days before I get star seller so today it has changed to 91% but I assure I have replied to all messages within 24hrs and I have proof,
I messages etsy support but they are really confusing me what should I do ?
@LaEssenceOfEden: "I have proof" Are you basing this on the applicable CSV file available on your Star Seller page?
"I get flooded with fake accounts" Did you mark each and every one of these Messages as SPAM?
