This is not calculated properly. If someone sends me a message saying they want to make a purchase or thanking me for a great item I should not have to respond back to all those messages. If it’s a product inquiry or issue, sure I get it. But this is ridiculous!
I make purchases from my seller account so how would etsy have any way to determine if the messages I am sending are a message to someone I am buying from or selling to. They don't look at the content so they wouldn't know the difference.
Hello there,
Messages from the same buyer will now be consolidated into fewer threads. However, when a buyer reaches out via the Help With Order request, a new thread will be created which needs a response separately. These types of message threads need to be responded to in 24 hours to be counted positively toward your Star Seller score. New threads will now have notification badges showing if a message is a buyer’s first time contacting you, or a new help with an order request.
For more information about this, you may check out this Forums Announcement and the Message Response rate section in this Help Article.
Thank you very much!
How would the automated program know the difference?
That is exactly how the program works and is supposed to work. All messages count. You can mark messages as spam if you do not want to respond. The rules are clearly stated right on your Star Seller dashboard and explained in 1000s of Forum threads just like yours.
So them saying thank you because they got an auto generated coupon, and can’t wait for their item to arrive requires me to respond back… It’s ridiculous, and pointless.
ANY etsy message you receive from anyone needs a response or to be marked as spam.
It takes maybe 2 seconds to do either one of those so I don't get why people think it's a big deal.
also I'm confused. Are you saying if someone sends you a thank you message for something that they bought from you, you don't respond?

So what I have learned is that even if the message doesn’t justify a response you have to respond. Thank you all for the solution to a problem Etsy created and should fix, but yet again dumps on the backs of their creators!
Every first message in a new thread or help request message, yes. You don't need the last word. The details are all in shop manager.
Still don't understand why people think it's okay to forego the niceties - please and thank you are not that hard to do and you probably only get something like that once in a blue moon.
@MarvelouslyMarvelous - I guess I don't understand why you think those messages don't justify a response.
I don't consider being polite a problem - guess I'm from the Old School.
Because I respondedin her initial purchase message and not the “new message thread” she sent again separately. You’re right I should’ve respondedthe same thing twice to the same person to two different messages. And you must be old school sitting a top that mountain. Some of us have 2 jobs, are caring for a spouse with cancer and a child with special needs, but by all means preach on!
I'm 87 in 12 days- just survived cancer and losing my voice occasionally. Not real high on the mountain.
I was taught to be polite tho. I was also taught to read directions.
This is all explained in the star seller info on your dashboard. All new messages have to be answered.

I agree. Why should I have to respond to a seller thanking me for leaving a review - and if I don't, then it counts against me?
I think this will discourage me from leaving reviews for any of my purchases, which is a shame.
